Research Title
To identify the reasons and impact of overweight obesity on elderly men in the UK
Formulate and record of possible research project outline specifications (1.1)
Research Background
The population of the United Kingdom is facing many health and social care issues which
have affected the lifestyle and health of the population. One problem includes ageing and
obesity. The UK population is facing a massive increase in the weight in the elder people. The
main reasons for the obesity of the people are poor diet and inactivity due to changing
lifestyle. The life expectancy rate of the male and female have increased considerable which
have increased the ageing population. The current situation of the population of the UK is
sarcopenia obese in which the people gain in body fat but losing their muscle mass and
functional capacity of the body decreases. This generally gives rise to obesity and inactivity in
the ageing population. This condition of the ageing population of the UK is giving rise to
many health diseases and problems like diabetes, cancer, stroke and many other serious
issues(Booth, et, al., 2012).
The increasing elderly obese population of the UK is increasing the poor health of the
population. The elder obese population is increasing the health concerns for the government as
obesity is giving rise to new diseases and health issues. The main health conditions which are
increasing due to the elderly obese population are type 2 diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure,
heart failure and osteoarthritis. These are just a few of the health conditions; due to such risk,
the elderly obese population is harmful to the economy. Obesity also affects the emotional
health of the population which is creating a low self-esteemed and depressed population
(Cleator, et, al., 2013).
Aim

Document Page
Identification of the reasons and impact of overweight obesity on elderly men in the UK.
Objectives
To provide insight into the health and social concerns of the UK population
To identify the core reason behind the obesity in the elder people in the UK
To analyse the effects of obesity on the health of elder people
To understand the importance of research in the health conditions of the elder
population
Identify factors that contribute to the process of research project selection and factors
that motivated your choice of topic for research (1.2)
Some of the factors are given below which has compelled to select the research topic –
The increased case of obesity -The UK population is facing many health issues which are
affecting the mental and physical condition of the people. The health conditions of the people
of the UK are getting worse with changing lifestyle and food habits.
Effect on current economy - The health condition of the UK population is affecting the
economy and education of the population. It is also increasing many health risks which are
affecting their professional health. The people are now suffering from depression, low
confidence and low self-esteem.
Obesity in elders - The elderly men are getting obese day by day. They are increasing their
waist circumference and body fat due to sugary food items and less physical activity. Obese
elderly men are decreasing the resources of the economy of the UK.
Provide an initial review of the literature on your topic of choice (1.3)
According to Booth (2015), obesity is the condition of the human when the body fat

accumulation increases in the body. The person’s health in relation to their weight can be
expressed in many ways but the most popular way if body mass index (BMI). The BMI is a
measure of the body weight in relation to your height. This is not used for diagnosing obesity
rather this is used to indicate that they are a healthy weight, overweight or obese. The better
measure to know the excessive weight is waist circumference, which also shows that people
are obese or not. The risks involved in obesity are poor health conditions and serious diseases.
The main causes of obesity are consuming more calories particularly fatty and sugary foods
and less physical activity. The changing lifestyle of people is also increasing the risk of obese
people. Nowadays people are involved in poor eating habits and spending a lot of their time
sitting in front of the screen or phones.
According to Franssen (2014), there are many other problems related to obesity which have
increased the concern of the people to changes their eating habits and lifestyle. The major issue
with the increasing elderly obese population in the UK is that it is affecting the coming
generation as they will suffer from the health conditions and issues which will affect their
lives. Obesity has also increased stress and tension in the people who are affecting their
development and education. The young generation is also affected by these poor health
conditions as they are developing problems like breathlessness, difficulty doing physical
activity, low confidence, low self-esteem, snoring and increased sweating. These
psychological problems are giving rise to mental and physical problems.

Research questions
1. What are the main concerns about the elderly obese population in the UK?
2. What impact the elderly obese population affect the country?
3. What is the health impact of obesity having on the population?
Research methodology
Mixed research methodology is effective to use in this research which helps to provide in-
depth insights into the obsessed elder people of the UK. Views and opinion of the people are
effectively considered by this research methodology.
Data collection method
The questionnaire is an effective way to gather information from the targeted population on
specific points.
Data analysis
The graphical analysis will be used in this research to conclude the outcomes from the
gathered information.
