TASK 1
During the maintenance of the electrical machine, there are two machines which have both
mechanical and electrical hazard during the planned maintenance of the electrical. For the first
machine which is a conveyor belt employed in the transportation of products. This conveyor also
contains elevator which is driven at a voltage of 230V DC/AC. The below are some of the
electrical and mechanical hazards while a planned maintenance is undertaken (Bird, 2013).
Mechanical hazard
1. When the cleaners of the conveyor belts are doing the cleaning. The conveyor belt shall
not be cleaned manually while the belt is in operation ( fall of a person into the belt)
2. When mechanics are busy operating the conveyor the moving machine shall be guarded
to help protect an individual from contacting the sprocket, gears, flywheel, coupling
shafts and fan blades of the rotating parts.
Electrical Hazard
1. When the electrical technician are maintaining the conveyors, they should have to ensure
that the electrically powered conveyor belt should be de-energized or switched off before
any mechanical work is done on it.
2. If there is maintenance done in the machines for both the electrical and mechanical
repair suitable warning notice must be posted at the power switches and power switches
will be locked
The next set of the machine which was involved in the planned maintenance is a mixing tank
agitator driven by a 400v induction motor controlled by a variable speed drive (Bahalt, 2012).

The tank is made of stainless steel and contains acidic chemicals when in use. Some of the
hazards are illustrated below,
Electrical hazard
1. Since the tank agitator uses an electrical motor which is driven by a 400 V inductor motor,
therefore there might be an electrical shock if less or no attention is given to the mixing tank
agitator. Then the operators of the agitator should try to prevent themselves from being
electrocuted.
2. If the operators are working of the agitator then the switch should be in easy sight of the
machine then one needs to come up with a hold card Lockout method of isolation of the
switch.
Mechanical Hazard
1. When there is maintenance or even during the operation the operators and the mechanics
of the may be overturn and eventually knocked by the mixing tank agitator.
2. The mechanics who maintains the agitator may be trapped due to the absence of the
protection of the casing.
TASK 2
From the health hazard discussed above for the two machines which can involve both electrical
and mechanical (Krul, 2012). It is also very significant to look for the solution of that health
hazard. Some of those solutions (control measures) of the above hazards are as below;

Conveyor system used to transport product between process steps
These control measurements are for both electrical and mechanical.
i. There should be an erection to help keep the workers from the conveyor.
ii. There should be a provision of an emergency stop button to help conveyor when there
is a need. This should be placed in an easily accessed position (Kenedy, 2012).
iii. Provision of the instructions for the transmission machines and the intake belts.
iv. There should be a signal to alert workers.
Mixing tank agitator
i. There is need to have a guard to help protect the individuals who are maintaining the
tank agitator
ii. There should be a provision of an emergency stop button to help conveyor when there
is a need. This should be placed in an easily accessed position.
iii. There should be a signal to alert workers.
