Introduction
A project has been undertaken by the Common Wealth Government of Australia for
designing and implementation of a secure online summary of the health information of an
individual. The system will provide an electronic summary of the key health information of an
individual. The system is to be implemented in such a way so that it can be integrated into the
existing local clinical system. A vision document of this project is developed in order to analyze
the problem, capabilities and benefits of the system. Currently funding is being sought in
building the “My Health Record” system and the project is in the early stages of development
(Koh et al., 2013). The problem, capabilities and the benefits of the project are as follows-
1. Problems
The main problem with the existing healthcare services is that there is apparent lack
proper information that is shared with the doctors and physicians. There are certain other issues
associated with the current system of providing medical services. The physicians often fail to
provide proper medical services to the patients as they does not have a proper idea of the past
health conditions of the patients. Furthermore, with the existing system, there is a possibility of
medical errors risking the safety of the patient. The electronic health record system to be
developed will provide the physicians with a better decision-making power as he can access all
the necessary health information and past medication of the patients in one single click (Pearce
& Bainbridge, 2014). The existing manual health record system increases the effectiveness of the
patient care services. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt an electronic record management system
in order to provide better healthcare services to the patients across the country.

The electronic health record system to be developed and implemented is capable of
storing the patients’ records in an electronic format so that it is easily accessible to both the
physician and the patient. Since the physicians will be getting a direct access to the all the
medical records of the patients stored in the system, it will be easier for them to suggest suitable
medication. This is capable of reducing the cases of hospital admission by improving the patient
care service. With this service, the patients will be able to remain connected with the physicians
24*7. The electronic health record system will store the patients’ data securely over internet and
the patient can control who can access their data (Silow-Carroll, Edwards & Rodin, 2012). The
data stored in the system can be modified or deleted according to the patient’s wish and
therefore, the system is capable of providing a secure medical service to the patients
(Thilakanathan et al., 2014). The electronic health record system to be implemented can be
described as a digital version of storing patients’ records in real time. It eliminates the
redundancies in data and data duplication. The benefits of implementing this health record
system are discussed in the following section.

The different benefits of designing and implementing the “My Health Record” system are
