What was the most interesting or provocative thing you learned from the attached
readings and why?
The most interesting thought here is how the author links an elementary school child
to a person in the state office with the importance of social studies in elementary years using
a simple sentence. “If the young people of our democratic nation are to grow into the office
of citizen, then social studies must be delivered in a developmentally appropriate way during
the elementary years.”
When children need to be taught to tie their shoes, read and write, overcome mathematical
problems and understand the principles and events of science in history, so will their
characteristics grow which their families and the societies in which they live appreciate. The
best way to learn to be frank, compassionate, stand up for their values, care for others and to
be sensitive and make good moral decisions is through instruction and training by responsible
adults.
How might the information you read be useful to you as a teacher?

becomes obvious that it is a teacher's responsibility to inculcate that structure into the child’s
mind. The marginalization of basic education in social studies has been consistently reported.
