Introduction
This report is a study of safety management systems and how they help in managing risk. Safety
management systems are management of business activities and applying the framework and principles
to the business. Safety management systems help you manage risk effectively in an organization. There
are six elements of safety management systems: Safety plans, ploicy and proceduers, training and
induction, monitorin, supervision and reporting. This report also shows the impoertance of safety
mangement and how an organization can use to manage risk.
Elements of safety management system through maritime domain
Maritime safety domain is related to protection of life and property through management
and technolody. Whereas safety management system is a way of managing risk of an
organization, by designing and developing effective Plans for the organization (Landis, 2011). It
is a core part of an organization’s operation.safety management sytem is a thing that combines
the different risks of an organization to ensure a safe ans good environment for everyone who
are part of the organizationa and the people who will enter in the organization. Safety
management have 6 elements and those are:
Safety plans
Ploicy and proceduers
Training and induction
Monitoring
Supervision
Reporting
Safety plan
It is a strategic action plan that forms the busines plan, in this step the current risk
and prespectives or a organization are analyzed and it is also decided on how to control
or remove the risk from the organization. In this a plan is made to governance the
structue within the organization to ensure that every worker is aware about the risk in the

organization and it is also ensures if the worker knows about the safety obligations of the
organization.
Policy, procedure and process
This stage includes all the safety pappers that contain the infrastucture of the
organzation or the company. This papper basically decribes all the safety behaviour
expectation, records and documents of the organization.
Training and induction
After the nature of the risk is analyzed in the workplace and then all the people
entering the organization are trained on this. For example:
Rules of the site
Rules of the company
Rules of the loacation visiting
The content of the training drepends on the level of the risk thw person is exposed to
Monitoring
In this stage a workplace or an organization is monitored depnding on the
circumstances. It is important for the orgaization to consider the level of risk. If the risk is
higher then the organization needs to monitor frequently. Monitoring is necessary because:
To ensure that all the risk of the organization are being covered that can be due to
change in process of the organization, like the installation of a new workstation
When there is investigation regarding a prticular incident
Supervision
Supervision is the most important stage or step in an organization, supervision
helps in ensuring if the workers are carrying out all the safety messures. The level of
supervision required in a workplace increases If the risk is low. If there is less effective
control in an organization, higher level of supervision is necasassry.

Reporting
The structure of governance of an organization needs to be reported at all levels of
the organization and not just to the bourd level. It is very important for the workers to know
the how a safety plan of an organization looks like so that they know if the safety plan is
right or not and this can only be done by taking feedbacks from the workers (Miller, 2011).
Using safety management system of an organization to manage risk
effectively
Risk is one of the main cause of uncertainity in any organization and therefore all the
organizations focus on indentifying and manging risks. Risk management is basically forcasting
and evaluating the enivironmental and financial and market risk of an organization (Rampini,
Sufi & Viswanathan, 2014). Safety mangement system can help managing risk in an
organization by using the the followig ways:
Identifying the risk
Safety managemnt system helps an organization to know when a risk occurs and
the causes of the risk, in order to manage an organizations risk it is impotrtant to know
the level of risk and the frequency of the risk (Wolke, 2017). This thing helps in
prioritizing the risk for planning. There are many different kind of risks such as legal
risks, environmemtal risks, regulatory risk and others. The good thing about safety
managemnt system is that the risk are visible to every stakeholder of the company and
this helps everyone in seeing the risk (Griffin, 2010).
Analyze the risk
Safety managemnt system states that once the risk is indentified it needs to be
annalysed. In this stage the scope or the level of risk should be identified . it is very
important to understand the link between the risk and other factors of the organzation. In
order to know the level of risk it is important to see what all factors of the business is
being effected by the risk, because there are some risk that has impact on the entire
business. The bsic steps to manage risk is to map out the risk of the organiztion by
different policies (Wilding, 2011).

Evaluating and ranking the risk
After this according to the safety mnagement system the next thing to do is rank
and prioritze the risk, there are different categories of risk, it all depends on the level of
risk, it is very importtant to rank risk because it help the organization to know which risk
is of high level and which is of low level.
Treat the risk
Safety managemnt system says that after all the above stages, it is important to
eliminate the risk. This is done by connecting with the experts in the organization, in this
environment each and every stakeholder of the company or the organization is contacted
(Helms & Nixon, 2010).
Monitor and review the risk
Accriding to the safety managemnt sysytem all of the risks cannot get eliminated
some of the risks are always present within the organization. There are two types of risk
that are important to be eliminated from the organization and those are market risk and
environmental risks, it is important for the professionals of the organization to have a
look at all the risks of the organization. Safety management system monitors all the risk
of the organizaton. All of these things allow the business to go on continuesly without
any risks.
Conclusion
This report shows safety management systems and its main elements, it also shows
different types of ways to manage risk in an organization. There are 5 elements of safety
mangement syatems which are Safety plans, ploicy and proceduers, training and induction,
monitorin, supervision and reporting. Apart from this there are 5 steps of managing risk in a
organization through safety mangement systems which are identifying the risk, analysing a risk,
evaluating the risk, treating a risk and lastly monitoring and reviewing the risk.
