Emerging infectious diseases are infections that have appeared in recent times within a
population and that are potentially spreading rapidly among the people living in a particular
geographic region. According to Ryan et al, (2019) they are normally infections that are new and
were previously undetected or as a result of known agents that have spread to new areas. Within
my local community, there are several changes that have occurred over the past few years that
could be associated with the occurrence of emerging infectious diseases. The first significant
change is the increase in cattle rearing practices as well as pet keeping within the community.
Many people have adopted the culture of keeping domestic animals and this practice could be
associated with the spread of zoonotic infections. Some of the emerging infections spread from
cattle to humans include Brucella and anthrax. Cows and sheep rearing practices tend to be
linked to anthrax that is as a result of the bacteria bacillus anthracis. Lyme disease is another
common emerging infection that is spread by ticks to humans and is caused by the borrelia
bacterium.
Another change within the community that may lead to a rise in emerging infectious
disease is increased set up of factories and local industries. This has significantly led to climate
change and a rise in temperatures that favor the thriving of certain vectors such as mosquitoes. In
addition to this, the setup of irrigation schemes for farming has led to breeding sites of the same.
Mosquitoes have over the years been linked with emerging infectious diseases such as yellow
fever, dengue fever and chikungunya virus that are associated with fevers (Meentemeyer et al,
2015). These changes could be beneficial in that people get to enjoy dairy products from rearing
cows but on the other frequent contact could cause zoonotic infections. The setting of irrigation
schemes has also been beneficial in increasing food production over the years but control must
be done to avoid breeding of mosquitoes and other vectors.
