Response to Shamari Washington
Quite correct. Dickinson, through her poem “Success is counted Sweetest” wanted to
prove to the people that it is only when they have seen the hardships of life that they would be
able to understand what success means. In this regard, my analysis of the situation of the poor
and the rich man with regard to their meal finds quite a significance. The meal becomes
important to the poor man since he has starved himself to afford that one meal. It is the hardships
that he had to undergo which made the meal that much appealing to him (Gale, 2016).

It is quite correct that Dickinson wanted the elaborate on the theme of success and the
feeling it generated among the people. When a person suffers or faces a particular agonizing
situation, he or she desperately wants to find a relief to the crisis. At the time when they
eventually manage to find the solution to the problem, the success they taste is as sweet as nectar
(Dickinson, 2016). In this context, the dying man realizes what it means to be finally able to
acknowledge the true meaning of success and die in peace.
