LIFE AND CONTROVERSIES OF EMINEM
(a)
Born as Marshall Bruce Mathers III in the year 1972 on October 1, Eminem is a
renowned American rapper, record producer and executive, songwriter, film producer and an
actor1. He is considered one of the greatest artists of the modern era and of all time in various
genres. The popular magazine Rolling Stone has placed Eminem in the top 100 list of Greatest
Artists of All Time and labeled him as the “King of Hip Hop”2. He has inspired and continues to
inspire the young generation across the globe with his rap especially.
Eminem came into prominence with his first ever album titled Infinite (1996) and Slim
Shady EP (1997), which was an extended play although both the projects did not do profitable
work. He had a hard childhood with him and his mother Debbie having to shuttle between
Michigan and Missouri over years. During his teenage years, Eminem was bullied at school and
in one of the incidents; he was severely injured by a bully named D’Angelo Bailey. When his
mother sued the school in 1982, the judge at the Macomb County in Michigan stated that no
lawsuits were applicable in the schools.
(b)
However, his life was filled with controversies and issues that involved his mother, the
lyrics in his songs that supposedly supported violence against women3. During one of his
scheduled concerts in Toronto, Canada in the year 2000, the Attorney General of Ontario Jim

Flaherty expressed that he must not be allowed to come because he propagates violence against
women. Liberal Michael Bryant even wanted hate crimes charges to be put against the rapper4.
These allegations and controversies did not stop Eminem from becoming a role model for
billions of fans across the globe. The reason is that many of the fans were inspired by his journey
from nothing to everything more than they were inspired by his lyrics5. Nonetheless, it would be
wrong to state that his lyrics did not inspire people because many accepted rap as the best way to
express one’s anger towards injustice and so on.
After Eminem became a successful rapper, he mentioned this incident in one of his
popular raps Brain Damage. Eminem faced several struggles on his way to success that included
a run-in with law at the age of 20 and substance abuse when he was fired from jobs multiple
times. Towards the end of the 20th century, Eminem came up with Slim Shady, his alter ego and
made huge inroads into the world of music especially rap. The alter ego allowed Eminem to use
lyrics that had mentions of drugs, rape, murder and abuse. The turning point in his life came
when he was noticed by Dr. Dre, founder of Aftermath Entertainment after he participated in the
annual Rap Olympics in the US.
(c)
Eminem is leaving behind a legacy that has engulfed not just the Western and European
culture but also those cultures that were considered closed to these influences. In countries like
China, Japan, India and other Asian and African nations, Eminem has a huge fan base and is

worshipped by the budding rappers. After the release of his film 8 Miles, the rapper’s influence
spread even more.
(d)
The lyrics in most of Eminem’s rap symbolize anger and frustration with the society and
the people who have criticized and bullied him. Eminem had himself once said that he formed
his alter ego as a response to the criticism he had received for being a white rapper. In one of his
most controversial yet one of the best selling albums The Marshal Mathers LP, Eminem uses
lyrics like “My words are like dagger with a jagged edge, that’ll stab you in the head…” It
clearly demonstrated the anger and frustration that he had inside him, which he burst out through
his rap.
(e)
Thus, to conclude, it could be stated that Eminem has been and continues to be the major
force behind people choosing rap as an art form. The essay highlighted the life of the rap artist
Eminem, his rise to fame, and his achievements. The essay also discussed the controversies
related to him. It was revealed that despite the controversies and legal issues surrounding the
artist, he is revered in almost all countries in the world by his fans and followers.
