1. Introduction and organizational background
The report is focused towards the effective analysis of team management in
organizational contexts. The selected organization for the study is Emirates Airlines. It is a
UAE based international airlines company with operations across the world. Team
management, team development and team performance monitoring are some of the most
important functional areas of any organization. The study is focused towards the effective
analysis of the various aspects that are connected with team management. The Emirates
Airlines is one of the largest airline organizations in the world. The company is a subsidiary
of the Emirates group. It operates around 3600 flights each week from Dubai. The
organization is headquartered at the Dubai International Airport. It operates flight services to
over 150 cities in more than 80 countries. Emirates are the fourth largest Airline Company in
the world. It is actually owned by the government of Dubai under the Dubai investment
corporation. The current revenue of the organization is 13.3 billion US Dollars (Emirates
2019).
2. Understanding Successful business teams
2.1 Characteristics of successful business teams
In any organizational environment, there are certain essential characteristics of
successful business teams. Emirates Airlines is an aviation organization, which means that
there are many essential departments that are present to improve the operations and functions
of the organization. Service becomes one of the most important features of any Airline
business. This further enhances the need for creating successful business teams.
One of the most important characteristics of effective business teams is
communication within the team. Communication is one of the most important aspects that is

required for understanding job roles, functional requirements, coordination and team work.
Hence, it becomes imperative for a successful business team that they communicate
effectively with each other. Poor communication can result in ineffective coordination and
job understanding. Particularly in any service situation this can mean severe loss of business
and goodwill.
Focus and goal orientation is another very important aspect of successful teams. In all
business environments having goals and objectives are important. The goals need to be
focused on the agreeable outcomes and results that are to be achieved (Druskat and
Albuquerque 2018). A plan needs to be set in regards to how teams can achieve certain goals.
Goal orientation helps to bridge the gap between team members and helps to bring different
viewpoints into a singular agreeable path for achieving objectives.
Successful teams are made from fair deal of support provided by each and every team
member. This creates an effective and efficient functional team. Teams cannot run on the
singular effort of some team members. A sense of belonging need to be created that helps all
team members to provide their essential efforts towards a given cause. Without coordinated
efforts towards productivity successful business teams cannot be created.
Team members in successful teams are always pleased to help others when they need
to operate with a helping side. Teams tend to be more efficient when organizational
assistance and access to the necessary resources are also available.
Everyone tends to be unique and can give personal experiences and understanding
that others may not have. Hence, diversity is much needed in the contemporary teams that
can cover all the abilities required and each person can be allocated a specific position based
on their strengths and abilities (Lockwood 2015).

Another much important feature of successful teams is leadership. Leadership is
effective in brining teams closer. They determine the functional attributes of the team. A
good leader holds the team together through all the challenges that the team needs to endure.
Successful teams have effective and efficient leaders.
Team organization is another very important feature of successful teams. Teams tend
to be more successful when they organize their work. Without organization of work,
workplaces tend to get more chaotic. Hence, in a service setting it becomes important that the
roles and functional areas of all the team members are effectively organized (Boies, Fiset and
Gill 2015). Team members in successful teams tend to ensure that they take their own
workload and help their peers in taking their workload at the same time.
2.2 Assessing the importance of team roles
Assigning roles to teams are important as they help the team to understand work
better. Roles are important also as an extended process towards achieving the long term and
short term goals and objectives of the team. Two significant factors are required for the best
success chances of teams. Firstly, it becomes important for the team leader to clearly specify
the objective, purpose and goals for the team and each team member. Roles are important as
all these can only be achieved by assigning the right roles to the right people. Secondly, the
team members need to effectively understand the role of each member. Each person needs to
agree on their assigned roles. Once the roles have been set and the team members are aware
of what is required from them they can coordinate effectively towards the achievement of the
shared objectives.
Roles are basically the ingredients to make the team effectively functional. This
means that the leadership needs to take care of its own roles and empower others in the team

to take care of theirs. In essence, roles are important in determining the value of success for
any given team. Roles are the measures of how much each member would need to contribute
towards the achievement of the specific goals. In this sense both individual, group and team
roles become much important. This makes the roles important in every sphere of team
management. It is important to understand that roles are important in case of each and every
team member as it defines their functions within the team setting. The value of roles can be
assessed in accordance of their significance in determining the outcomes that are important
for the development of the organizations. Without setting roles, it becomes almost impossible
to control the flow of work. Work specialization can be said to be important in this case as it
can help the team to allocate tasks in accordance of the same. It is work specialization that
causes the achievement of goals easier. This makes the allocation of tasks even more
effective as the parts of the task that require greater specialization can be effectively allocated
and finished.
2.3 Analysing value of theoretical models
Theoretical frameworks become important in terms of determining the effectiveness
of the process of management. Theoretical aspects connected with team management are
mostly concerning the development of motivational factors that can enhance the productivity
of team members. One important theoretical model that can be provided is the progress
principle. It is important to understand that progress in important in the context of team
settings. According to this theory small progressive steps are required for team members to
be more creative in their work (Javadi 2018). It is important that the teams take part in
activities that help in the development of the professional abilities of the team members.
Hence, undertaking more meaningful projects can actually help the teams to grow and
develop more. The theory proposes the setting of clear objectives, providing autonomy,
resource provision, providing ample time, providing essential support, learning from failures

and recognizing success. The various reward theories state that teams need to be rewarded in
order make their objectives more effective in achieving (Knapp, Breitenecker and Khan
2015). The management aspects that are connected with teams need to be made more
effective through the implementation of the process of reward. This gives a psychological
advantage to the team members that want to work more effectively to keep on winning the
rewards that they want. The transformational leadership theory also stresses on leadership
that is focused on the development and optimization of teams. The theory focuses on
improving the performance aspects of each individual team member by effectively aligning
their motivations and the achievable goals.
3. Supporting team development
3.1 Stages of team development
Team development is a very important process in regards to team management. It is
through effective team development that organizations can focus on creating teams that can
deliver excellence concerning productivity. In accordance of the roles that teams essentially
play for any organization. Team development becomes an important process in view of its
significance towards determining organizational outcomes. In accordance of the development
of teams the following stages become very important.
Formation stage- This is the primary important stage in team development. This involves an
orientation period. This helps the members to get acquainted with each other and also the
organization. It is important to get this stage right as this determines the rest of the journey of
the teams. This stage is also filled with much uncertainty due to the primary nature of the
process.

Storming stage- The storming stage is difficult in the context of team development. This
stage is marked by conflict. It is also a stage that is competitive and helps the emergence of
new personalities. Members tend to disagree more on the goals and objectives that are set.
They work towards overcoming essential obstacles. However, as this stage causes a lot of
intra team tensions, lack of conflict management can create issues that are long term.
Norming stage- Once teams can tackle the storming stage, the next stage is the norming
stage. In this case a degree of unity is achieved within the team. The development of
consensus between the team members help to bridge the gap between their different work
perspectives and makes them understand and accept differences and work accordingly. As a
result team performance increases.
Performing stage- This is the stage where the team unity, consensus and cooperation is at the
highest. The team at this stage is mature, well-functioning and well organized. This is the
stage that is almost the best stage of the team performance (Alas et al. 2018). However,
conflicts are still persistent in some cases. At the same time the conflicts are dealt with
constructive mechanisms. Problem solving and meeting team goals become very important at
this stage.
Adjourning stage- This is the stage where most team goals have been accomplished. There
are more emphasis on completing the final tasks. The work load becomes lesser. This is the
final stage of team development. The team has finally been successful and this is the time for
disbanding. Eventually, the team disbands and new tasks and job roles are assigned to the
members. Work acknowledgement talks place in this stage of team development.
3.2 Motivating team members to achieve objectives
Motivation is an important factor considering the prospects of any team. It is the
factor that helps to determine how much interest and value the team members would be

assigning with the work that is provided to them. This helps in determining how the work
would be approached, done and eventually be completed (Morgenroth, Ryan and Peters
2015). Emirates are a service providing company and employees need to be constantly
motivated. In this case rewards and recognitions become very much important. The members
would firstly need to be motivated in accordance of the roles that are assigned to their teams.
They need to be provided personal care if required. All the members should be made clear
about the goals. They should be provided information about the financial, non-financial and
reputational rewards that they might be able to achieve as a result of accomplishing the goals.
It is important to understand in this case that motivational requirements of different people
are different. Thus, it is important to develop better relationship values within the team. The
management needs to provide essential values toward the needs of the team members.
According to Morgenroth, Ryan and Peters (2015) the role model theory can be effectively
used to motivate the employees towards success. In this case the role models can be selected
for providing an ideal motivational person for others in the team to follow. This is best done
if the person is an effective leader. Another theory that can be applied is the hierarchy of
needs theory provided by Maslow. In accordance of the same the physiological needs comes
first in determining motivation. This is followed by in descending order of need, safety needs,
love and belonging, esteem and self-actualization (De Vito et al. 2018). However, all the
needs are essential for effectively addressing the motivational needs of the employees. This
hence becomes much important in case of motivating the employees in the service
environment of the Emirates.
3.3 Encouraging open communication between team members
Communications is a very important factor that is required to enhance the interactions
in the team. The communication aspects need to be clearly addressed to create a better
environment for the team to function. The key activity that organizations like Emirates should

engage in are encouragement of open communication between the employees. Workplace
communication is both important and tricky at the same time. Hence, it is important to
understand that teams need to be aware entirely of the various communicational needs that
they can have. Subsequently, these needs need to be addressed through the development of
proper and effective communication plans.
Communication in workplace needs to be simple and compact in accordance of the
needs of the people in teams. It is also hierarchy based in many regards. It is important in
Emirates that the communication is made in a simple but effective manner. For supporting
team development direct and open communication is necessary. For example- it can be said
that group session and team meetings are very helpful. At the same time personal feedback
can be used to both motivate team member and understand them. Open group discussions
need to be encouraged as they increase trust and value among the employees. There need to
be communication that is more formal during the professional requirements. In this case
emails and messages can be used. However, the messages that are being provided should be
clear, concise and relevant. Teams need to also be provided with communication that can
help each members with the identification of specific goals. In this case this can be some
essential customer service goals that need to be achieved in the Airport. In this case multi-
channel communication should be used to emphasize more on the meaning of the message.
Thus, it becomes important that direct communication like meetings and group sessions are
coupled with emails, messages and workplace posters and process charts. It is important that
the people know about the communication that is taking place. The communication
requirements also require cross-cultural communicational aspects. This would help in the
formation of better cross cultural interactions. In an airline company setup this is as important
as there are people from all cultures that are present in the workforce. At the same time it is
also important that cross-cultural communication is implemented across all the organizational

settings. Communication effectiveness is important in determining the value of interactions
that take place between the team members and the interactions that occur between the team
and the leadership.
3.4 Evaluating conflict resolution within team members
Conflicts can arise any time in any given organizational setting. Hence, it becomes
important that conflicts are resolved before the get bigger. Long standing conflicts can
hamper team productivity eventually leading to the failure of the entire team. Conflict
resolution techniques that can be implemented are feedback processes, avoiding conflict
situations and understanding the differentiating views of the team members. It is important
that the 5 management strategies can be utilized in this case to handle conflict situations that
can arise in any given workplace. The strategies are separately, accommodating, avoiding,
collaborating, compromising and competing.
Accommodating is giving the opposition side what it needs. In this case the team
members need to be provided with the aspects that they want the most. Avoiding is another
strategy that can be used in the team. Conflict is avoided through not challenging the existing
differences in opinion of the team members. This is a strategy that cannot be used in all cases
as it may at times aggravate conflict (Rosler, Sharvit and Bar‐Tal 2018). Collaborating is an
important conflict avoidance measure that can be taken by the different organizations. This
means integrating the ideas of many people. Collaborating is a very important conflict
resolution strategy as it provides everyone with the ability to voice their opinions.
Compromising is also a widely used conflict resolution technique that is utilized across the
various organizations. In this case the major element is giving up on the position of a person
if no agree able solution can be reached. This is a widely used conflict management technique
utilized across the various organizations. Competing is a technique of conflict resolution that
clearly depends on a winning and another losing side. Hence, in certain limited situations

within the organization, this type of resolution can be used. Competitive strategies are used
especially in crisis situations where there are no other alternatives available.
4. Monitoring team performances
4.1 Monitoring performances against given objectives
The monitoring of teams requires the effective management of team performance
requirements against team performance values. Monitoring is very important aspect
connected with team management. It helps to identify the value of the team management
process that has been implemented in a given organizational environment. It is important to
understand that monitoring is one of the best ways to understand how much a team has lived
up to the performance standards and the parameters for effective performance. In this case the
team that needs to be monitored is the customer service team of the Emirates Airlines. It is
imperative that certain important KPIs (Key Performance Indicators) are selected. Monitoring
the performances through the effective integration of the KPIs would require the collection of
performance data of each individual team members. This would require the creation of
specific standards of performance measurement systems. It is important to note that the
standards and parameters should be selected on the basis of performance requirements.
KPIs can in this case be considered to be customer interaction value, customer
interaction time, customer feedback, and resolution rate, time management and other
important parameters as required. These KPIs can be quantified in order to understand more
effectively the performance values of the members of the team. People would need to
consider the value that they can bring to the team to eventually select their performance
paths. It becomes important to select the most important parameters to provide the best
possible monitoring value. The people of the team can be observed in accordance of the
parameters that are set for them over a period of time. It becomes very much important that
