A. Article review
Leadership reflect various traits and aspects that are considered to be essential when it comes to
leadership. Emotion intelligence is one of such factor that seems to be very significant in leadership
studies, and various researches have been conducted in discussion of this factor. According to
research conducted by Daniel and Gloeman present in Harvard business review reflect the importance
of emotional intelligence above technical skills and IQ in leadership. According to Daniel, the
effective leaders consist of high level of emotional intelligence, which eventually consist of
components like self awareness, self regulations, empathy, social skill, and motivation. The article
also reflected the evaluation of emotional intelligence through various competency models. Other than
the analysis of all the components of emotional intelligence, the article also reflect one of the
important research problem that is if emotional intelligence can be cleared or not (Goleman, 1998).
The two most interesting and significant topic considered in the article were self regulation as one of
the component of emotional intelligence and analysing if the emotional intelligence is present or can
be learned. Self regulation is one of the important components that will regulate the individual’s
emotions. As per the article, the emotions are driving due to various causes, which need to be
managing and for which self regulation play major role. The article presents the reason for self
regulation as an important aspect to be study when it comes to emotional intelligence. This is one of
the components which come after self awareness, it is important to know oneself and the key strength
and weakness pertaining to the emotions so as to regulate the same in order to concert weakness into
strength for oneself and for the team.
The emotions are majorly impacting an individual and specifically in case of leadership, the reason
being it can influences the leadership style adopted by the individual. Thus the emotions are to be
regulated and controlled by one in order to make the leadership journey better. Thus the article
includes this component as essential in leadership. Other than this, self regulation is also considered to
be significant competitive reasons as this will reflect the importance in the changing and ambiguity of
business nature today. The leaders or individual that have regulated or manage their emotions are

found to be more stagnant at the time of change and innovation, which has become part of business
today due to technological transformation (Goleman, 1998).
Another interesting topic that has been considered for the discussion in the article includes
understanding if the emotional intelligence can be learned or not. One of the most common debate
topics is if the leaders are made or born, on which various theories have also been propounded in the
decades before. The article studies if the components like level of empathy are already part of the
individual as they are born or can be acquired by learning during lifespan. According to the scientific
research the emotional intelligence are genetic. However the developmental and psychological
research reflects that the nurture is the key element playing major role in this aspect. Thus the
research is majorly in favour that the emotional intelligence can be learned. Moreover the article also
argued that eh emotional intelligence is also identified to be increase with age and time, the reason
being the individual is believe to be more mature with age as per the science. Thus the behaviour of
an individual may change with the level of maturity, thus reflect that the emotions and management of
the emotions by the individual can also be changed. Thus with efficient resources, learning, and
experience the emotional intelligence and associated components can be learned (Goleman, 1998).
Moreover the article also included the ways an organisation or the leader could enhance emotional
intelligence. The recommended actions that can be taken by the organization are to focusing towards
provision of training to the employees considering limbic system. Like conventional training
programs could be considered that would consider individualised approach. Thus the article reflected
that with practice, and persistence the process of emotional intelligence could reflect last longer
results. This topic was concluded by Daniel through reflecting the significance of emphasizing
emotional intelligence in organizational approach that may not found to be sufficient through a
seminar. The steps taken by the leader and organization to control the emotions as and learn emotional
intelligence is significant which makes enthusiasm as one of the major tool to be used for retain this
learning (Goleman, 1998).

B. Self emotional IQ
From the article there have been majorly five components identified that reflects the level of
emotional intelligence or emotional IQ of an individual. Thus among the five, the three component
that I feel are strong and can be considered to be my strength are self awareness, motivation, and
empathy. However the aspects that I feel that I must work towards improvement are self regulation
and social skills. The reason being I am quite aware about my nature, actions taken, emotions.
Moreover, I found myself as a person who empathise to others and understand others emotions by not
sympathising but keep my foot in their shoes to understand their feeling. However, one this that I feel
this component is tends to be weaker as per my SWOT analysis, as I am not able to balance the
empathy towards others which reflect need for improvement in self regulation. Other than this, the
area for improvement is through social skills, it is convenient to feel pain and emotions of others, but
it is also important to reflect the same. Thus, it has been identified that it is important to learn the
social skills and improve them as well.
