Title: “Relationship between emotional intelligence and physical health”
Aim and objectives
Both emotional and physical health are consider important for an overall health and there
is a strong interrelationship between these two such that poor physical health lead to increase
risk of developing mental health problems and similarly, low emotional intelligence affect
physical health. Emotional intelligence also important for personal as well as professional
success and improve the relationship as well as boost the communication skills of an individual.
In the same way, present research also main purpose is to examine the relationship between
physical health and emotional health because increase in depression leads to cause negative
impact upon health. Similarly, current study is also helps to develop a deep understanding with
regards to psychology health and determine how the improve the quality of life as well.
Aim: “To determine the significance of relationship between emotional intelligence and
physical health: A study on NHS”
Objectives:
ď‚· To develop an understanding of the concept of physical health and emotional
intelligence.
ď‚· To examine the factor related to emotional intelligence that affect physical health
ď‚· To determine the impact of emotional intelligence over physical health.
Background
Theme 1: Concept of physical health and emotional intelligence
In accordance with Bayot and et.al., (2020) emotional intelligence is the ability to
perceive, control and evaluate the emotions of an individual. So, it is the set of characteristics
which actually deals with perception, expression and swing of mood and emotions which is
further related to physical and mental health. Thus, it is also define under four different
attributes such that self-management, self-awareness, social awareness and relationship
management. Under psychology, it is consider one of the most important key aspect because it
directly affect performance of an individual, physical and mental health as well as social
intelligence.
On the other side, Zysberg and Hemmel (2018) explain their views that physical health is
that condition which consider everything from the absence of disease to fitness level. So, it is
critical for overall well-being and also affected by emotional intelligence, lifestyle, diet and
1

behavior. A person is stated physical good when he cut down smoke, alcohol and have a balance
diet, proper sleep etc. So, physical health is important because it improve the health and reduce
the risk of developing different disease as well.
Theme 2: Factors related to emotional intelligence (EI) that affect physical health
Ubago-Jiménez and et.al., (2019) reflect in their study that emotional perception and
expression leads to affect the logical thought of a human being and ability model also proposes
that emotions can make thinking more intelligent and also handle the emotion. So, there are
some factor related to EI which affect the physical health such that stress, those who have high
stress will lead to cause physical health and this in turn lead to high blood pressure, headache
etc. On the other side, Matthews, Zeidner and Roberts (2017) explain their views and stated that
communication excellence is consider an important factor associated with EI because it is a
social process through which an individual express their views and share own feeling. So this is
affect the health in positive manner because when a person share their views in better manner
will help them to be stress free and this do not cause any negative impact upon physical health.
On the other side, Acebes-Sánchez and et.al., (2019) argued that with the help of four-
dimensional ability model of emotional perception which determine the trait of an individual
that determine the expression and moods of a person which is affect the physical health. That is
why, motivation is the factor which is also link with EI that also affect the physical health of a
person. Such that motivation can be intrinsic or if a person is not motivated internally then it is
emotional state. Hence, if an individual is not motivated internally, then it leads to affect the
physical health of a person which leads to depression and anxiety. Malinauskas and et.al., (2018)
present their views and stated that self-awareness is another factor which is deal with the subtle
aspects of person's emotional state i.e. mood, tone, body. As every person is busy in their own
work and if they are filled with stress then this is linked with the health of a person as well
(Factors affecting emotional intelligence, 2019). Thus, this is clearly reflected that the factor
affect the physical health of a person in opposite manner.
On the other side, if a person is mentally good and easily express the thoughts with each
other clearly means that he or she is fit emotionally and physically. For instance, self-regulation
that is a factor which is link with EI is the ability to think before a person speak. So, if human is
aware of how to take action and pay attention in front of others, it means that they are
emotionally fit and their body language, tone and eye contact are also reflected their EI status.

Lee and Chelladurai (2018) also supported that, empathy is that ability that identify another
person's emotional state and then react accordingly. Also, many of them stated that person uses
their empathetic abilities to manipulate others action. So there is a strong relationship between
empathy and emotional intelligence which sometimes used for the others or sometimes do not.
So, there is a strong link between the emotional intelligence with physical health because it
improve the physical health and also affect it as well in same time.
Hence, many studies also reveals that people who are strongly weakened and adjust their
mood as well as have an ability to cope up with the stressful situation means that they have an
ability to accept all the physiological changes in their body. This is a an ability which shows that
factors affect the physical health of a person and also able to cope up the situation as well.
Theme 3:Impact of emotional intelligence over physical health.
In the view of Anjum and Swathi (2017) there is a strong relationship between the EI and
better physical health because if there is a high level of EI which is correlate with the low level
of physical health. Also, emotional intelligence is grow as the age grows and that is why, it is
stated that individual who perform regular psychical activity will also changes their emotions
like, it enhance the positive mood, provide positive and pleasant emotion as well. So, low level
of emotional intelligence is also shows that it leads to depressive mood and this in turn leads to
affect the entire physical health in negative manner. Sarrionandia and Mikolajczak (2020) also
support by present own views that people who do not have an ability to show their emotion, they
need a medical attention so that they easily accept the physiological changes otherwise it cause
huge results in their body as well.
As emotional intelligence is define as the set of abilities which is concern with the
regulations and management, that is why, it directly affected the physical result of a person.
Hence, Wang and et.al., (2020) share their views and stated that if a person is working in a
company, and there is a high job stress which affect the performance level of the person in
negative manner. While on the other side, if a person knows how to manage the stress then it do
not cause any side effect upon physical health. Foji and et.al., (2020) claim that individual who
have an ability to regulate their emotional state are more healthier and also express their
feelings and regulate their mood states as well. So, it is essential for the person to have an EI
3

because it all to cope up with stress and these type of people also have less amount of stress as
well which in turn provides a greater result of life satisfaction and happiness as well.
Naik (2019) also present the relationship between emotional intelligence and physical
health by describing different dimension in which it is evaluated that people with higher EI are
able to perform better as compared to those with lower EI and as a result, it also improve the
phsyical and psychological health of a people as well. Hence, EI is an integral part that help to
develop human relationship and also, chronic stress and negative effect which also accompany it
such as anger, depression and anxiety, even a person not able to handle the problem as well
(Psychological and physical well-being of Lithuanian youth: relation to emotional intelligence,
2017). Bayot and et.al., (2020) explain their views by referring the dimension of EI that leaders
in the company with an aptitude of self-regulation are less likely to be aggressively
confrontational and easily make decision. This dimension also assist to control the emotion and
leads to grow the physical health of a person as well.
So, emotional intelligence is basically used to deal with stress and that is why, having
high EI means person is able to manage all negative feelings and this in turn leads to controlled
the emotions and do not increase physical health issues like, low on performance level. Thus,
there is a direct relationship between the physical health as well as emotional intelligence.
Methodology
Research Type: Research is regarded as a group of the activity which are performed
with the sole motive of achieving the motive of the business in long run. Considering the
different kind of research there are variant kind of in general. Out of which two research kind are
best which can be opt by the scholar. Qualitative and Quantitative are two of them. Qualitative
research type is the one in which inquiry related to the different data are carried out in the
unstructured and non numerical form (Mackey and Gass, 2015). They look at considering the
wider aspect of information. Quantitative research type on the same note investigates and give
the solution in the form of numerical form. To conduct these sort of the study for the client
scholar has gone with the Qualitative research, reason behind the same may be it was to difficult
for the scholar to present the outcome in the numerical form in front of the viewer.
Research Philosophy: Research philosophy is collection of variety of the belief in
regards of the phenomena in context to way of collection of the data and analysis of the same in
the study. Two philosophy in the field of the research are commonly trusted by the scholar, first
4

one is the positivism philosophy, this kind of philosophy is more concern toward looking at the
universal truth or the information which is approve or used by variety of the author in the past as
well. At the same time Interpretivism, the another type of the philosophy is more concerned or
toward having the research in context of Human interest in the topic (Kumar, 2019). In the
context to the study scholar has chosen the alternative of Interpretivism research philosophy
reason behind the same may be because to find out the outcome of the study it is very much
viable to understand the human interest involve in the study.
Research Approach: Research approach is regarded as variety of the assumption which
are generally made in regards to Data collection and analysis. Two approaches which are
regarded as most proficient and reliable in the field of the study are Inductive and deductive
research approach. Inductive approach is the one which consider at looking at the different
theory and model which are derived once the outcome of the study has been find out. At the
same time Deductive research approach is regarded as a one which pass is find out on the basis
of already made theory and model in the past as well. This report has consider inductive research
approach, reason behind the same is find out that these sort of the approach is consider to be
more supportive for the type of the research which has been selected by the scholar.
Data Collection: Outcome or Success of the study is overwhelmingly depended upon
the quality and proficiency of data collected to find out the outcome of the research. Process of
gathering the same is known as Data collection (Flick, 2015). In the current research Researcher
has gone with both primary as well as secondary data to found out the solution of the issue.
Primary data is generally regarded as the one which is gathered for the first time and also from
the occurrence directly. At the same time secondary data is regarded as the one in which
different data is collected by the sources who has collected the data in the past for their purpose.
In current study primary data has been gathered through the survey which was conducted on to
50 nursing manager. Questionnaire through which data will be gather will be containing both
open ended as well as close ended Question in it. At the same time Secondary data will be gather
by going through the article and journal which talks related to topic of study as well.
Sampling: Sampling is the process in the study which consider looking at the group of
the people on to which the survey will be conducted. As it is very important to select the group
of individual from large group of population. There are two sampling tool which can be used to
select the sample size. First one is the probabilistic sampling which is more toward giving all the

individual in the population a equal chance to get selected in the sampling size. On the other
note non Probabilistic sampling in which all the individual are not given the equal opportunity to
get selected in the sample size of the company. In the current study researcher has gone with the
simple random sampling method under probabilistic method to select the sample size of the
company. Sample size which has been selected for the current study is the 50 nursing staff in
general.
Data Analysis: All the data which is generally collected with help of Data collection
process need to be analysed by applying variety of the different type of Data analysis tool. There
are variety of the different type of data analysis tool in general. For current study scholar has
driven toward having a thematic data analysis tool. By using the same analysis tool data will be
presented in more presentable way which means presenting with the help of Themes and table.
Also by making different sort of the graph of different sort of information.
Limitation: There are variety of different type of limitation which is also seen by the
scholar at the time of carrying out study for the client (Zangirolami-Raimundo, Echeimberg, and
Leone, 2018). Time was one of the same, as it was find out that time allotted to complete the
study was very limited. By taking help of different team member in the study I was able to
complete the project on time. Another limitation which was identified is selection of source to
collect the data. For the same reason by taking help of the tutor I was able to collect the good
quality of the data so that on the basis of the same outcome can be derived in the research.
Ethical Consideration
In the process of finding out the solution of the study, scholar in general has make sure
that all the activity of the business is compile with the ethical consideration (Moon and Nolan,
2019). As Researcher has taken the consent of all the participant in the past itself before
gathering the information from them, reason behind the same is that no one claim about wrong
full activity. Researcher will make sure that Questionnaire which will be drafted will be drafted
in a manner that content of the questionnaire does not impact the value or emotion of any of the
participant or the individual of the society. Scholar in the research has make sure that all the
information and all the activity has maintain the confidentiality at the time of requirement of the
same in the study as well. Also scholar in study has given the special attention upon the different
activity in regards of knowing that not short of the harm has been seen by any of the participant
6

or the party who is interested in the study. Also there is no sort of manipulation done in regards
of data which has been collected from the participant (Miller and Blackler, 2017),
Expected Results
By using the qualitative study, scholar determine the results by using the primary and
secondary data in order to meet the define aim and objectives. Such that with the help of
conducting literature review, it is analyzed that there is a direct relationship of emotional
intelligence with physical health because high EI means person have an ability to cope up with
the results and this in turn do not cause nay negative impact upon the performance of a person.
On the other side, with the primary research, scholar collect fresh information related to topic
and this in turn leads to generate the best outcomes and also answer the research questions as
well. Further, by using qualitative study, in- depth analysis is also conduct which clearly
examine the significance relationship between emotional intelligence and physical health.
Thus, these research methods contributed their best in order to meet the define research
aim and with the help of selected participants, it is easy to determine their views regarding to
research topic. Also, with these research methods, the expected results shows a positive
relationship between emotional and physical health which in turn leads to cause direct affect
upon overall health of an individual. Thus, from the secondary research, it is also expected that
some factors which are associated with EI also cause both positive and negative impact upon the
physical health of a person.
