WORKSHOP OUTLINE
TOPIC: Developing Emotional Intelligence for Better Workplace Performance.
The core objective of the workshop is to incorporate both group and self-directed activities to
enhance the development of the major components of emotional intelligence which would assist
individuals become well in terms of behavior, interpersonal relations and overall output at the
place of work.
Focus
During the workshop, the training shall focus on developing individual skills on the core areas of
emotional intelligence which include:
Self-management
Self- awareness
Social awareness
Relationship management
Through the individual and group activities, the strengths and weaknesses of members and
groups shall be unearthed. The participants shall therefore have an opportunity to identify the
areas they need to work on in order to become more productive especially at the places of work.
Group size
The workshop shall work with a total group size of 50 participants
Duration
The program is intended to run for 2 days with three sessions allocated for each day, one in the
morning the other after tea break and the last one in the afternoon.

The workshop is intended for individuals and corporate groups that are intent on improving and

The participants could therefore be workers in any corporate institutions for instance, healthcare,

Icebreaker
Emotional intelligence for teams and individuals is an important aspect of growth in any area of

other interpersonal skills such as rapport building, persuasion skills as well as empathy. Through
the group activities, the participants shall be guided and provided with the necessary resources to
optimize the process of learning. In a nut shell, the Emotional Intelligence program shall be full
of fun and also quite engaging. At the end of the program, the participants shall take an
emotional intelligence assessment as a way of monitoring and evaluating progress and extent of
learning.

DAY 1

Setting of house rules, formation of groups and identification of team leaders.
The rules and leaders shall be summarized and mounted on PowerPoint to guide
the participants and facilitators through the two day program
Expectations
The facilitator through question and answer sessions obtains the participants
expectations and individual goals in relation to the training.
The trainer then outlines the core objectives and goals of the training program
MID-MORNING
Duration 2 hours
Introduction
Definition of the core areas of emotional intelligence which include: self-
awareness, social awareness, relationship management and self-
management.
The participants are engaged on their individual understanding of the
core areas of emotional intelligence.
Self-awareness and Social Awareness
Activity 1: Name Game
Participants are provided with a worksheet with two spaces where they
are supposed to write out two names. One is the participant’s own name
while the other is the name of a person who has influenced their lives.
This could be a friend, family member of role model.
The participant writes out each letter of their name in a vertical manner
and does the same for the second name.
The next step involves inserting an adjective that describes one of their
positive traits for each letter of their name. e.g.
J- Joyful
O- Optimistic
E- Energetic
The facilitator then call out random names from the participants’ register

and allows them to share their traits giving them time to go into detail to
describe why they feel like that about themselves and the person of
influence.
This session is meant to help the participants learn the art of self-
appreciation and awareness. Including the traits of others around them
also develops social awareness skills among the participants
The session is recapped with a few responses from the trainer and
participants on key lesson learned.
AFTERNOON
Duration 1 Hour 30 Minutes
Self-Management
Self-management is often developed on the basis of self-awareness. It implies
that individual is able to control their impulsive behaviors and feelings hence
managing them in a healthy way to allow a person coexist peacefully with the
others.
Activity 2
Participants are provided with a worksheet that lists some positive and negative
emotions for references
The positive emotions include; happiness, peaceful, joy, calm, relaxed, flexible,
harmonious, caring and cheerful.
The negative emotions include; anger, disappointment, anxious, worried,
defensive, stressed, concerned and frustration
The participant is supposed to think about emotions that best describe them
especially when they are angry.
The participants also lists their reactions during these situation by refereeing to a
past event.
The worksheet also provides the participant with an opportunity to note what
they are likely to do in future in case such situations arise again. This portion
ought to be an improved version of the past reaction.
The facilitator then welcomes about 10 participants to share their experience
before outlining his final remarks on the need to develop self-management skill

Activity 3
Participants are divided into groups
Members share experiences on how they interact with others when happy, sad
and when under pressure
The participant also explore alternative ways through which such situations
would be better managed.
The facilitator then allows the groups through their leaders to highlight their
findings to the rest of the team.
