1PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
Part 1
Introduction
The ability to understand and monitor own emotions as well as the emotions of other
people in order to make the difference between the emotions and to use those emotional
information in order to guide the behavior and the thought process of a person is known as
emotional intelligence (Miao, Humphrey and Qian 2017). It has been seen that most
organisations have been focusing on emotional intelligence in the workplace as it has been
labeled as a very valuable skill as it helps in improving communication in the workplace,
managing the workplace, helps in solving issues in the workplace and also helps in building
positive relationships in the workplace. According to many researchers, emotional
intelligence is a skill which can be enhanced if received proper and efficient training
(Mattingly and Kraiger 2019). The importance of emotional intelligence in the organisation
has become vital for the fruitful productivity and operations of an organisation. This paper
will focus on providing a professional development workshop which aims on helping
employees develop and enhance their emotional intelligence skills for their and the growth of
the organisation.
Discussion
Emotional intelligence has become extremely important in the workplace and
according to researchers and scholars, self-awareness helps in understanding the needs of
one’s own and if certain events occurred the facilitating an evaluation of the alternative
solutions. Wheeler (2016) states in order to make the emotional intelligence be effective, the
first thing should start with oneself, and one cannot help in enhancing the well-being of

another person without having a proper sense of oneself and understanding how to operate in
an emotional level. The emotional intelligence level usually distinguishes the leaders in an
organisation and it is their skill which helps in developing an effective and productive
workplace. Thus, emotional intelligence as a skill has been a priority for every recruiter and it
is important for organisations to try to enhance the emotional intelligence skills for the
existing employees and the employees who are going to join to make the workplace more
effective. In order to do this, the organisations need to come up with a professional
development workshop which will aim at improving and enhancing the emotional
intelligence of the employees in the workplace or the organisations.

This professional development workshop is a 7 days workshop which aims on

become competent which will help them in both their professional as well as their
professional development.
The introductory session will help in getting the employees or the participants get
accustomed and be aware of what they are investing their time on to learn and make them be
prepared for the rest 6 days. This will also help them to understand the importance of
emotional intelligence especially in the workplace. The next activity which will be
maintaining a journal and penning down their reflection will help them in critically
evaluating themselves as well as others. According to scholars, the firs and the foremost thing
which one needs to have in terms of emotional level is self-awareness as one needs to
understand one’s self before helping and encouraging others to achieve their goals (Côté
2017).

5PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
The mentor will check the strengths and weaknesses of the employees through
conversations and the group discussions will help the employees to understand the
importance about the feelings and having empathy towards one another for helping one
develop and grow and also grow themselves. Li et al (2016) states that the attitudes and
behaviors are a huge aspect of emotional intelligence as it tells the people about how they are
going to act in a difficult situations which helps in measuring how one will be competent
enough to work in an organisation and help in the improvement of the organisation. The
emotional intelligence test will help in ensuring that the workshop is successful and one has
developed the necessary skills for emotional intelligence.
Conclusion
Emotional intelligence is highly important in an organisation as it helps in making a
positive environment in the workplace for the employees and also helps in the fruitful
operations of an organisation. This professional development workshop will help the
employees in developing and enhancing their emotional intelligence skills which will help
them in being productive and help their subordinates and their team to be competent as well
for the benefit of the organisation.

6PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT WORKSHOP
Part 2
The professional development workshop which has been developed is a 7 days
workshop which aims on enhancing as well as developing the emotional intelligence skills
and level of the employees. The major and primary focus of this workshop is to make the
employees realize and understand about self-awareness and thus, there is an activity which
has been incorporated that will make them maintain a journal and write their own reflections
on the activities that they have been doing throughout their workshop and what they feel
about their participants. This will help them in analyzing and critically evaluating themselves
which will help them in developing self-awareness which is highly important especially while
working in an organisation.
Then there will be an assessment of their strengths and weaknesses where it is
necessary to check the different emotions one has and how they react to different situations.
The group discussion will be an interactive session where one will engage and communicate
in various topics and will also play interactive games which will help in team building and
also help them in being in a close realm to understand one another. This will help in
enhancing the emotional intelligence skills as this is important while working in teams and in
an organisation so that one can collaboratively provide positive outcomes for an organisation.
Assessing the journal written by the participants and the emotional intelligence test
will help in evaluating whether the participants are self-aware and know about their strengths
and weaknesses and how compassionate or empathetic they are towards one another so that
they can help others grow as well which is a leadership quality which most organisations look
for. This workshop will not help the employees or the participants develop and enhance their
skills but will also be helpful in both their professional as well as their personal development.
