Importance of empathy in design thinking
Definition of Empathy
Empathy is defined as the capacity to understand or feel what
another individual is experiencing from within their frame or
reference, which in other words can be stated as the capacity to
place oneself in the position of other individuals
Definition of Design thinking
As opined by Hamington (2019) design thinking is defined as a non-
linear, iterative process which seeks to understand individuals,
understand various challenges and assumptions, redefine problems
and develop innovative solutions for prototype and testing.
Importance of empathy
Empathy leads to helping behaviour of individuals which helps to
benefit social relationships. As human beings are naturally social
creatures, therefore empathy helps an individual in building
relationship with other individual which benefits others. When
individuals experiences empathy , they are most likely to indulge
themselves in pro-social behaviour which helps in benefiting
other individuals. Elements such as altruism and heroism are
also related to feeling empathy for others.
Reasons for individuals lacking
empathy:
Individuals fall victim to cognitive biases- It is mostly observed
sometimes that the way individuals perceive the world around them
is influenced by a large number of cognitive biases. It is often
observed that individuals often attribute other individuals failure to
internal characteristics while blaming their own shortcomings on
external factors. These type of biases make it difficult to visualize all
the factors which contribute to a particular situation and makes it less
likely that individuals would visualize a situation from the perspective
of another person.
Individual de-humanize victims- It is often observed that most
individuals fall victim to the trap of thinking that individuals who are
different from them also do not feel or behave in the same manner as
they do. This situation is mostly common in cases where other people
are physically distant from an individual.
Individuals blame victim- At times when another individual has
suffered through a terrible experience, various people often make the
mistake of blaming the victim for their respective circumstances. This
tendency comes from the need of individuals to believe that the world
is a fair and just place. If individuals starts believing that other people
receive what they deserve and accordingly deserve what they
receive, it often fools individuals into thinking that such terrible things
could never happen to them.
Importance of design thinking in the
modern world
As stated by Peter (2017) over recent decades, it has become
very important to develop and refine skills which allows
individuals to understand and act with rapid changes in current
environment and behaviour. The modern world has become more
interconnected and complex in nature, therefore design thinking
offers a medium to struggle with all the changes in a more
human-centric manner.
Benefits of design thinking:
As stated by Dziadkiewicz (2017) design thinking enables business
organizations to identify, understand and address in a better
manner the problems which affect business organization and their
customers. Design thinking values solutions over processes,
creativity and innovation over fixed traditions. The benefits of
design thinking process for business organization are as follows:
Collaboration- Good design is collaborative in nature and it draws
its inspiration from everywhere which also includes culture and
surrounding communities. It also focuses in seeking feedback from
an entire team. The design thinking strategy helps in proposing
similar kind of idea in an approach to overcome all the hurdles
faced by a business organization. Collaboration refers to engaging
with individuals having different perspectives and potentially
develop new and creative ideas to solve a problem.
User Focused- One of the main benefits which is associated with
design thinking is that it focuses on the end user. Whether it is
regarding developing a new technology or a new project
management process, defining who will use the business solutions
is the key to understanding how to develop it.
Testing- Designers are used to pitching work to clients or
marketers who turn it down or request changes. This particular
kind of mentality to produce and change can benefit business
organizations in various ways. Designers pursue their idea and
accordingly accept input along the way in order to help in
development of their ideas which takes shape until and unless it is
fully realized.
Improved morale of employees- It is often observed that some
business organizations encounter stress while facing challenges.
Whereas in other organizations it is observed that changing and
restructuring causes stress for the organization. Therefore
possessing a design thinking mindset can help these organizations
and the human resources linked to those organization to realize
that solutions are available and accordingly this can helps them to
find solutions which would help to boost the morale of employees
belonging to organizations. Thus employees who are witnessing
stress as a result of challenges and change can benefit with design
thinking.

or service is being designed. Therefore in order to gain those insights
it is very important for design thinkers to empathize with the people
for whom they are designing their products and services so that they
can understand their needs, thoughts, emotions and motivations.
Hence empathy is the primary stage in the design thinking process,
and is a very important process in context of design thinking as it
helps in ensuring the success of design thinking process.
