honed employability skills to successfully enter the health and social care sector. This unit gives

The Orchardville company is a limited company by guarantee with social status. It is under the
umbrella of the Orchardville Society, a charity that assists young people and adults with learning
disabilities and autistic spectrum disorder prepare for and secure employment. At present 25% of
the work force have a learning disability including Mark who started a part time job earlier this
year through the support from the society. Mark applied for the position of domestic assistant in a
care home and several reasonable adjustments were made to enable Mark to accept the vacant
position. Firstly, Mark completed a six-week work trial which gave him the opportunity to decide if
he liked the job and what supportive requirements he would need. At the end of the work trial a
meeting was held involving Mark, his employment officer and the manager of the home to discuss
the outcome of the work trial and what were the reasonable adjustments that would be required
which included the following:
The purchase of different mops as Mark found it very difficult to use the industrial
mops. This was minor adjustment enabled Mark to carry out this aspect of the job to the
same standard of cleanliness and at a minimal cost to the employer.
Mark also found it difficult to complete all the tasks in the required scheduled time limit of
three hours per day. The employee agreed to increase Mark’s hours by 30 minutes to
enable him to comfortably complete all the tasks and not feel under pressure.Mark
continues to work at the Care Home but is still under the support of the Orchardville
Society Employment and skills service.

Imagine yourself as the Manager of the care home dealing with Mark’s case. As the Manager
your first duties are to ensure that the home is responding to all current legislation and health and
safety laws to enable Mark to work in a safe environment. Part of your role in managing and
leading your workforce will be to set up targets that each department must achieve in respect to
Mark and his abilities.
From an earlier meeting with the employment officer from Orchardville Society you both
discussed what support Mark would need and how this would be implemented. As the Manager
of the Care home you have conducted an Assessment, of the home and have found that there
are quite a few things that have been left and not kept up to date. These need to be investigated
and implemented as soon as possible. You have also found that the staff have been working
there for many years and have a certain way of working and you with your new ideas and
systems they will see as a threat to the way that they work as new ideas mean changes to their
current working conditions. Show how the staff need to develop good interaction skills as well as
developing transferable skills and how they are so relevant in today’s working environment. In
helping Mark to achieve a good working balance he will also need to be able to understand the
relevance of good time keeping skills. Staff do not like to embrace the new changes and you
must find ways to engage the staff to accept the new ways of working to maintain equality and
diversity within the care home and to ensure that the home is working to the current legislation
and standards of Health and Social Care. You are the Manager and you need to be able to show
how you will produce the plans for staff to work collectively as a team. As part of this process you
need to develop the processes to work in harmony as a cohesive and interactive team working to
achieve the set targets and objectives of the organisation. You need to be able to be able to show
what methods you would use to motivate the staff and how you would deal with any issues
arising from the new methods and ideas that you want to implement.

Learners must submit their assignments via Turnitin. Turnitin is an originality checking and
plagiarism prevention service that is used by the College to assess assignments.
The College has a cap on the number of times that an assignment can be submitted through
Turnitin. Students will now only be able to obtain one similarity report prior to their final
submission.
Students wishing to generate a similarity report before their final submission should submit their
assignment in the Drafts Folder on Turnitin. Only one submission can be made to this folder and
no submissions to this folder will be assessed.
The Final assignment must be submitted in the Final Submission Folder or the Learner will be
considered absent for the submission, even if they have submitted in the Drafts Folder.
For the final submission, Learners must add the feedback front sheet to declare the authenticity
of their assignment.
A pass grade is achieved by meeting all the requirements defined in the assessment criteria for
each individual unit.
All the assessment criteria and merit grade descriptors need to be completed within a unit to

Mitigating circumstances can be defined as circumstances that are unexpected, significantly
disruptive and beyond the control of the student, which could not be reasonably predicted or
accommodated by the student and which affects student’s ability to meet assessment deadlines
or impairs the performance of the student in assessment.
