A HR Manager develops a plan and makes their employees work as per the plans to attain
organizational objectives.
The Manager must be fully aware of ethics, employee engagement and legislation to
develop an effective work environment.
It is the responsibility of the HR Manager to assess and evaluate their employee’s
performance and thereby help employees work effectively. Manager has to concentrate
on bonus payments, salary levels, training needs and need for communication among

strengths and this forms an essential element of performance objectives.

right in the workplace.
1.3 Make recommendations for improvement
The manager of the Travelodge Hotel is highly effective against the defined objectives.
However, some additional improvements are required. The manager has less knowledge on
travel and tourism market. The manager has to learn more on this field in order to acquire proper
knowledge. This knowledge can be collected through reading different newspaper and
magazines. The manager has to develop communication skill. In order to improve the
communication skills, the manager needs to attend some spoken English classes and group
activities.
The manager is little lack in problem solving skills. The manager needs to do some problem
solving activities in regular basis in order to develop this skill. Another way to solve this skill is
to read problem solving practices of some other lead HR managers from ideal journals.
The HR manager should use an effective appraisal system to evaluate performance level of the
employees. The best appraisals methods can be undertaken by the HR manager are ranking
method and manager by objectives. As per ranking method, performance of level can be
measured from to bottom level. Management by objectives can be used in order to improve
performance of organization through clearly defined goals (Earley, 2015).
1.4 Review how motivational techniques can be used to improve quality of performance
Rewards and incentives: Employees can be motivated through appropriate incentives against
their performance. It is essential to provide both team as well as individual incentives. There are
two types of incentive techniques. One is financial and another is non financial incentives.
Financial incentives include gift cards, cash prizes restaurant gift certificates and others (Shields
et al., 2015). Non financial incentives are compressed work weeks, extra vacation days and
choice of parking slots (Yousaf et al., 2014). These incentives motivate the employees to stay
committed to their workplace and perform well. Employees should be given awards like best
performer award and employee of the month award on their success. Employee achievements
should be celebrated through conducting various events. Praising employees in staff meeting is
6

another way to motivate employee on their success. The organization needs to find the team
accomplishments along with individual effort before providing rewards and incentives.
Self motivational factors: Employees can improve quality of performance through various self
motivating factors. Employees having self confidence have the capacity to set and reach at their
goal without any managerial support. When employees will believe in their own ability, it
becomes easy for them attain success throughout their work. Employee motivation can be
increased through analyzing own strengths and weaknesses. Optimistic attitude is another self
motivating factor that can help the employees to achieve organizational goal (Dweck, 2013). An
essential component of self motivation is the supportive work environment. This helps the

TASK 2
2.1 Develop solutions to work-based problems
A proper solution to various work-based problems is immensely essential and this can be well
handled by the deft management skill of a manager. In hotel industry, work stress and
harassments are some of the major work based problems that can be well solved to run the
business successfully and help employees to work efficiently. It is obvious to mention that if
employees do not find an appropriate work environment, they will not be able to utilize their
fullest potential and work effectively.
Job stress is a very common work based problem that is faced at least once in their professional
lifetime by the employees in an organisation. Fresher in an organisation cannot take
overburdening work pressure and thus their inefficiency to deal with excessive workload can
bring immense stress and depression among them (Kang et al., 2016). Moreover, there are
employees, who are efficient to work, however, when shouldered with excessive workload they
fall flat on the ground. In recent days, Travelodge has to combat with such issues where
employees are complaining about stress and depressive work culture.
It was also seen that superiors and seniors in the organisation were bullying and harassing their
subordinates and during the tenure of a HR Manager, a detailed analysis of the relevant situation
was done and finally it has been found that several employees have complained against this
condition and have even lodged it in their grievance redressal cell. Finally, it was identified that
new candidates and fresher were not been properly dealt and were often been humiliated in front
of others. Employees were frustrated with this situation and due to this continuous humiliation;
employees were quitting their job without caring for organisational goals and objectives
(Akgunduz, 2015). This can degrade the popularity and fame of Travelodge Hotel and this in
turn can have an adverse effect on their client base.
Solutions: Being a HR manager it is significant to concentrate on the workforce planning and
even distributing the work among employees. Firstly employees must get proper training and
even develop their skills through developmental programs and it is the duty of the manager to see
that employees are trained enough to cope up with any volume of work and pressure. To deal
8

with pressure does not mean that newly recruits has to be overburdened with work and hence
even though well trained they must not be shouldered with excessive work and stress. HR
Manager must also be responsible to take effective measures against all odds that can degrade
their organisation and hence reducing harassment of their employees and maintaining a healthy
atmosphere is a crucial job. Employees are an organisation’s valuable asset and hence, they
must have a feeling of being valued. It is important to maintain a great interpersonal
communication among employees to diminish depression and stress.
2.2 Communicate in a variety of styles and appropriate manner at various levels
To
The Senior Manager
Travelogue hotel
Sub: Issues related to work based problems and possible solutions.
Sir,
This is to inform you that I have been working in this organisation for quite a long time and have
noticed that excessive work stress and harassment of employees are acting as a stumping stone in
the growth of our organisation. It has come to my purview that senior level managers have been
persistently harassing the fresher and newly recruits are getting de motivated due to these.
Recently, I have been reported that employees are reluctant to come and work in such adverse
atmosphere and many are quitting their jobs and taking their jobs with our competitors. This can
weaken our position in the market and even lead to a face loss. Seniors are even discriminating
employees unnecessarily and this is eventually unethical for our organisation. Many employees
have even lodged complaint in the grievance cell and are asking for an urgent help.
In addition to this, job stress especially for fresher has been creating a gap in the workforce and
people are not inspired to work with such overloads. Proper training and few development
programs can rectify the situation and make them work efficiently too. Our organisation can also
make them work in teams, so that all works can be equally distributed among all and thereby
reduce their work pressure and help them work in a supreme form.
I will be highly obliged if you take immediate and necessary steps in the concerned matter and
save our prestige and honour to take our organisation to its zenith.

To whom it may concern
This is concerned with the grievances reported by several employees of our organisation. It has
been noticed that numerous incidents have occurred where employees are harassed and even
bullied by seniors unnecessarily. On several occasions, employees are humiliated because of
their religion and their culture and this is against the basic human rights. Recently this has
changed the overall work environment of our organisation and management has been in deep
concern due to such incidents. Numerous written and verbal complaints have been categorically
lodged in the grievance redressal cell and the management team will undertake severe actions
against those employees who are found guilty.

2.3 Identify effective time-management strategies in relation to the work-based experience
or in your role as a manager at Travelodge
A proper Time Management is one of the most essential strategies that must be undertaken by
HR Manager at Travelodge. Effective Time Management Strategies are:
Set a particular work objective that helps in identification of those strategies that are in
relation to management of time (Geyser et al., 2016).
Work in a synchronized manner and help in keeping all appointments up to ate and at
proper time
Post plan setting, it is necessary to attain realistic goals and it is necessary that not all the
elements involved in such plans should be monitored thoroughly and prioritization of
work is essential.
To make an effective management of time it is valid to set short time goals and try to
achieve that within a specific period. When this is achieved, it is necessary to achieve
long term goals as employees by this time have understood the efficacy of time
management and has also about time management strategies.
Avery effective way of managing time is by categorisation of work based on days, weeks,
months or by understanding the nature of work (Deery and Jago, 2015).
In those scenarios, where numerous goals are overlapped, it is the duty of HR Manager to
understand the priority of the task and get it accomplished accordingly.
Time can be well managed if HR Manager can overcome his own faults and failures and
endeavour to set an example for other employees.

TASK 3
3.1 Explain the roles people play in a team and how they can work together to achieve
shared goals
Roles of people in a team
Team members have to perform many roles in order to achieve team goal. These roles can be
explained through focusing on Belbin’s team role theory.
Action –Oriented roles (complete finisher, shaper and implementer)
Coach is another important role of employees. Skills and knowledge of employees are different
in a team. It is the duty of each member to share knowledge with colleagues as a coach. Active
listening skill is a quality of a coach. Each team member should focus on each other’s problem
so that one team member can help another. Other key skills of a coach are providing feedback
and questioning on manager’s decision (Belbin, 2012). An employee should be a good leader.
Employees need to lead a project work with great passion. Sharing passion is another leadership
quality of an employee. Another quality of an employee are to work in a team and giving priority
to those work having more importance in achieving organizational goal. They may take their
decisions of their own, which is an important characteristic of a good leader. An employee
should have the capacity handle difficult situation on behalf the team members.
People oriented roles (Coordinator)
A team member needs to be an effective communicator. Through communication team members
can convey each other’s idea and skills. They can exchange information through verbal,
nonverbal and written mode. Employees will able to know the intention of their colleagues with
help of an effective communication. Employee can resolve workplace issues through
communicating with managers. They can share innovative approaches with their supervisors
with help of communication. A good communicator never finds difficulties while performing
organizational activities. Team members can perform the role of a coordinator in terms of
supervising other’s work and synchronize own work (Senaratne and Gunawardane, 2015).
12
Document Page
Thinking roles (Evaluator and specialist):
Innovator is also an important role of an employee in a team. Employees need to come up with
innovative approaches for the betterment of organizations. An innovative idea will help in
solving a problem in different manner. As an innovator an employee may perform skills such as
cognitive, behavioural, technical and functional skills (Belbin, 2012).
3.2 Analyse team dynamics
Team dynamics are the psychological forces, which influence the direction of performance and
behaviour of a team (Gilardi et al., 2014). This is an important factor in a workplace. Group
dynamics can be understood better through analyzing how individual’s distinct role is affecting
other team members. It has a significant impact on the profitability of the organization, staff
retention rate, individual and team performance along with overall reputation of the organization.
Team dynamics can be improved through knowing the team. It is essential to identify positive
and negative roles of team members. Individual performance needs to be evaluated in order to
know how their action is affecting the group as a whole. If one team member’s behavior is
affecting team’s performance, then it is the duty of everyone to tackle with that problem. Some
necessary measures should be taken in order to change in the behavior of that team member.
Teams having lack in proper direction may result in developing poor team dynamics. Roles and
responsibilities of each team member must be defined clearly before starting a work. Effective
communication is highly necessary for a good team dynamics. Each team member should
communicate clearly through using effective modes of communication. In addition to this, each
team should have a good leader who can motivate and encourage other to work as per the team
goal. Team dynamics can be improved through leadership activities.
Building a supportive team culture can help in enhancing team dynamics. A team can use certain
team building exercises in order to encourage healthy and strong relationships among team
members. Team dynamics can be improved through supporting open communication and shared
ideas with help of an inclusive work culture (Nederveen Pieterse et al., 2013).

The responsibility of a team leader is to pay attention to the team work and supervise detailed
team work. Positive behaviors like collaboration, respect and trust can be given priority in order
to improve team dynamics.
3.3 Suggest alternative ways to complete tasks and achieve team goals
A HR manager may adopt following approaches to complete the tasks and achieve team goals.
The whole team and members needs to understand the team goal that they are committed to
attain. Team members should have an overall mission, which is agreed upon by each member.
Team members must stay accountable for outcomes of each work. They should have strong
feelings of belonging to the group. The team members need to be agreed upon all procedures
established by the team. Participative leadership should be adopted in order to achieve team goal
within a stipulated time frame.
It is essential to find out necessary ways to measure what is performing well. Team members
need to address pin point problems associated with an approach. They should be focused towards
both short term and long term goals. Some brainstorming sessions must be arranged that can help
the team members to come up with creative ideas (Wagner et al., 2014).
In order to complete tasks, team members can break a bigger project in to some small parts. This
will made the supervision of team members easier. Team members should keep track on each
work for which they cannot miss a single activity. Individual team activities must be monitored
by the team leader. Each individual must stay loyal to their work. Achieving team goals can be
easier through giving importance to all activities.
Team members should be given timely feedback so that they can make appropriate changes in
their working styles. Team exercises and team building help to enhance interpersonal
relationship among members. Another important way to complete tasks and achieve team goals
is encouraging team members in order to become adaptive in every organizational change.

must be appreciated and this forms a good source of encouragement to them, which will
lead them to give their entire dedication to their organisation (Friedman et al., 2018).

makes them enhance their skills that will help them in their carrier progression and
