Task 1
Introduction
In this segment of the report, the responsibilities and objectives of the Travelodge Manager have
been discussed to understand the effectiveness of the manager. Certain recommendations have
been listed. It analyses the manner in which motivational techniques can improve the quality of
performance.
1.1 Develop a set of own responsibilities and performance objectives
A Manager has many responsibilities that should be fulfilled in order to attain the objectives
determined to assess the performance. The Manager has to maintain a direct and indirect
relationship with the employees, customers, and clients to ensure that the business functions
smoothly. The manager has to make significant decisions regarding the business operations of
the company (Lategan and Williams, 2019). The manager should have the interest to learn new
things and adapt as per the situation so work role. The managers should be aware of the various
employment rights and legislation and ensure that they are followed. Every member of an
organization should follow the work ethics and the manager should take care of it.
The performance objectives comprise of different aspects that the manager needs to take care of
so that the employees are motivated and the business operations are conducted effectively.
Certain criteria such as judgmental data, personal data, production data etc should be determined
on the basis of which the employees should receive appraisals. Rating method like a checklist,
paired comparison, the ranking can be adopted to monitor the performance of the employees.
The manager should monitor the performance of the employees and use methods of appraisal
such as promotion, bonus, salary etc to encourage the employees to perform better (Helyer and
Lee, 2014). The manager should also conduct training sessions to improve the overall
performance of the employees. Effective communication is a key aspect that will ensure that the
operations are conducted effectively so that the manager should communicate in an appropriate
manner to avoid any misunderstandings.

1.2 Evaluate own effectiveness against defined objectives
The manager of Travelogue Hotel has been able to fulfill the responsibilities and attain the
defined objective. The manager can take appropriate decisions regarding business operations that
prove beneficial for the company. The manager has also portrayed decision-making skills in
unexpected and critical situations due to which the problem was easily solved and helped in
avoiding interruption in everyday business. The manager maintains a healthy relationship with
all the employees, customers and clients. The manager ensures that the employees of the
company follow all the work ethics and there is no workplace discrimination or harassment
against any employee. The employment rights and legislation should be followed and every
employee is obliged to follow it (Garrick, 2012). The legal aspects of employment are followed
by the manager. The manager takes complete responsibility for the tasks and adopts measures to
improve the performance of the employees.
However, the manager of Travelogue Hotel is not flexible enough to incorporate new methods
and adapt to it easily. If the manager cannot adapt the changes successfully then it will be more
difficult for the employees to accept and adopt the change. The communication channel used by
the manager often results in confusion among the employees due to which they make mistakes in
their tasks. The appraisal system adopted by the manager of Travelodge is not appropriate as the
performance of all the employees are not monitored and recorded to allow them with adequate
suggestion to improve their performance and gain appraisals from the company. Inadequate
appraisals of the employees make the workforce demotivated and consider themselves as
detached from the company. This consequently affects their performance and ultimately the
productivity of the company reduces (Cottrell, 2015).
1.3 Make recommendations for improvement
There is always scope for improvement in a business organization that will allow the company to
improve their business operations and lead to the development of the business (Armstrong and
Taylor, 2014). In the case of the Travelodge Hotel, there are some areas that require
improvement. The manager of the hotel should adopt certain measures that are discussed below:
The manager should develop new communication channels that can be formal, informal,
written or verbal depending on the message that is to be transmitted to the employees,

customers or clients. It will ensure that the message is communicated effectively and there is
so misunderstanding among the employees, clients or customers.
The manager should try to become more adaptable and flexible so that new changes can be
incorporated into the regular business operations of the company, which will lead to the
growth and development of the company. The flexibility of the manager will also facilitate to
conduct other business operations much more effectively and allow the manager to manage
the operations in an improved manner (Ferguson and Smith, 2014).
The manager should determine and implement an appropriate measure through which the
performance of the employees can be measured and recorded. An adequate record of the
employee’s performance will make it easier for the manager to analyze the performance and
accordingly award appraisals to the employees.
1.4 Review how motivational techniques can be used to improve the quality of performance
The employees should be motivated towards their work so that they are able to perform better.
However, seldom employees become demotivated, due to which their performance deteriorates.
The manager of the organization should adopt a range of motivation techniques to motivate the
employees and improve their performance (Olaniyi, 2013). The manager of Travelodge can
employ different motivational techniques such as feedback, appreciation, improvement, benefits
and learning incentives. These will allow the manager to motivate their employees as per their
nature and improve their performance for the development of the organization. The manager
should offer incentives to the employees when they perform better. A learning incentive can also
be created to encourage the employees as well as improve their knowledge.
Another technique that can be used by the manager of the Travelodge Hotel to encourage their
employees is to provide continuous feedback and suggest the ways in which they can improve
their performance. It will make the employees understand the areas they need to improve and
encourage them to adopt measures. However, the manager should ensure that the employees are
not severely criticized for their mistakes as it can make the employees demotivated (Sekhar et
al., 2013). The manager should also appreciate the employees when they perform well or without
guidance. Adequate appreciation is one of the best ways to motivate employees. The manager
should also determine rewards and benefits that can be enjoyed by the employees when they
meet the criteria predetermined for those benefits and rewards. These measures will allow the

manager to ensure that all the employees remain motivated towards their work by offering them
a range of rewards and benefits that they will be able to enjoy by working effectively for the
company (Lee and Ok, 2012).

areas, which can be improved. It further discusses the motivational techniques that can be used

Task 2
Introduction
This segment analyses some work base problem at Travelodge Hotel and develops a solution to
those problems. It portrays the communication style adopted by the manager of the Travelodge
Hotel when communicating with the senior management as well as the staffs. It evaluates time
management strategies that can be adopted by the company to improve the productivity of the
employees and the organization.
2.1 Develop solutions to work-based problems. You need to develop solutions to at least two
work-based problems identified during your work experience or in your role as a manager
at the Travelodge Hotel.
The manager of an organization faces many problems during everyday business operation and
these problems need to be solved in order to prevent interruption in the business operations of the
company. The problems can mar the customer experience and spoil the brand image of the
company (Bratton and Gold, 2017). The manager should develop solutions immediately so that
the business operations are not affected. The manager of the Travelodge Hotel also faces certain
problems such as the latest technology, maintenance, renovation, customer expectations, working
hours, leadership, pricing, and booking. The manager of the Travelodge Hotel recently faced
issues of maintenance and renovation in some parts of the organization's infrastructure, which
required to be addressed soon. The manager devised the solution of calling the experts that will
be able to help in renovating the structure. The renovation work began soon and it was addressed
quickly to provide uninterrupted services to the customers.
Another problem faced by the manager was the management of the working hours of the staff
when the demands for the services of the Travelodge Hotel were increased. The company
witnessed a sudden growth in the number of customers due to which many employees had to
work overtime so that the customers are served in the best way possible and their customer
experience is enhanced. In such a situation, the manager developed a solution in which a single
employee was made responsible to keep track about the working hours of the different staffs so
that they can be compensated accordingly.

2.2 Communicate in a variety of styles and appropriate manner at various levels. You need
for example to write a formal letter to the senior management of the hotel to inform them
about the problem and a memo to all staff
Communication is essential to ensure that business operations are conducted in a successful
manner. The manner and matter of communication differ when communicating at a different
level (Armstrong, 2012). The formal letter below reflects the manner in which the manager of the
Travelodge Hotel communicates with the senior management about the above-discussed
problem. On the other hand, the memo for the staff of the Travelodge Hotel shows a contrast in
the style and matter of communication.
Formal Letter
To,
Senior Management
Travelodge Hotel
Subject: Renovation of the north side of the organizational infrastructure
Respected Sir,
I would like to inform you that the demand for our services has increased recently. The hotel has
a limited number of employees which is not adequate to serve the increased number of customers
staying in the hotel. The Staffs have been asked to work overtime to serve the customers
successfully. However, there is a strong need of recruiting new employees in the hotel so that the
customer experience does not deteriorate and all the customers receive adequate services. I
would request to look into the matter and recruit new employees soon to cater to increased
demands of the hotel.
Thanking You,
With Regards,
Manager
