PEOPLE AND CULTURE 1
A company culture is a combination of all the experience of life where employees and people are the
key tool behaviour. Culture is basically influenced by organization executives and other manager
staff where employees are playing significant roles in managing small place as well as large place.
Employees are the people who are hired by an employer to do a specific job that may be in a coffee
shop as see in this study. I was assigned to be an employee who is playing role model where he was
not getting what he was too achieved in the workplace.
We have done several activities where there are three role players in coffee shop. The first one
entitled with owner or manager of a coffee shop, the second one is an employee who has some
issue with the coffee shop and he is underpaid also and the third one is from the Australian
government who has represented himself as a mediator between both and helps employee for
resolving issues in coffee shop. The manager was not paying him for the overtime, no payment for
penalty rates and no payment for sick leaves. As, I was working in a coffee shop for two years and I
am not getting my sick leave, no penalty rates, pay for overtime and entitlement and continuously
working for long hours at my place.
As according to Fair Works Ombudsman, there are rules and regulation which are to be followed by
manager or top level authorities to sustain employees for long period of time in workplace or in
coffee shop. I was working in a coffee shop for 2 years and never get pay for what I have worked at
that place. There was no sick leave allotted to me and working for long hours in coffee shop results
in no overtime pays and enough leaves annually. Australian Government in his Fair Work
Ombudsman, already states about pay and leave policies which should be provided to employee at
workplace (Fair Work Ombudsman, 2019).
I was more frustrated and when I was devoting my more working long hours at coffee shop, I want
sick leaves, overtime pays and many health benefits. The person from government made such
regulations for the employees where employee in training period or when they have done overtime
work, they should be provided for each hour in a single day or a month. Excess work of more than 12
hours which is engaged as 12 hour in single day or 304 ordinary hours with eight weeks will surely be
paid more than the employee minimum hourly wages (FAIR WORK COMMISSION, 2019). In my
opinion, they should be pay for extra overtime work done at coffee shop by me, as one of my friends
had received good amount of incentive in form of doing extra work with long hours at some other
place.
Australian Government in fair work ombudsman, states regulations which each and every employee
should be cleared about. A national Employment standard provides ten minimum entitlements to
employees that ensure to sustain in workplace environment and these are to be known by all
employees at any workplace. Maximum numbers of week hours are 38 hours per week and id they
want additional then there is extra reasonable hours. Annual leave and personal leaves for up to 10
days per year are promoted for employee (Fair Work Ombudsman, 2019).
As an employee of coffee shop, manager do not provided me with any leaves such as sick or paid
leaves. But with the help of government, it becomes easy to know about these regulations. Fair work
commission provides information about the process of making agreements in workplace area that is
helpful for employees. According to me I am the key motivator for workplace and should be bind
with agreements that can help him to clarify his working in that place. With some extra work done
by one of my friend at some other place, he is bind with agreement and company has provided all

the services and healthy benefits in his place with assured leaves (Australia's national workplace
relations tribunal, 2019).
I was feeling not at all good when manager of my workplace compiles me with all these. A person
from Australian government guided me for the rates with employee who has completed higher
number of hours in workplace as to work on weekends, overtime, early morning shifts or late night
shifts. Pay calculator helps to identify for how much days and hours you have done extra work and
calculate on basis of that. Common allowances includes first aid, sick leaves, pay for what he has
done, annual leaves, travel, leading supervisor which are kept in mind of workplace and manager
also (Fair Work Ombudsman, 2019).
In my opinion, there was easier process of taking annual leave in coffee shop. Annual leaves adds a
basic requirement of ordinary hours of employees and it allows them to get refresh and take paid
time off from their work at workplace. One person who has represented from Australian
government, told about these that there are certain guidelines as to taking leaves in advance or
managing large amount of leaves. There is no maximum and minimum calculations of leaves that
could be took at a time. When manager and employee comes to conclusion for take a single day
leave, weeks off or number of days (Federal Register of Legislation, 2009).
The employees who are underpaid cannot sustain in the workplace where there is no options of sick
leaves or annual leaves. Sick leaves also termed as personal leave let the employee to take time for
their personal illness, family emergencies and caring responsibilities. National employment
standards illustrates unpaid leaves and paid leaves entitlements where employee in a year can get
10 days which are full time employees. In other organisation also, there are certain criteria for taking
leaves according to employee and this is the right of employee to get leaves (Australian Government
, 2019).
I have learned many things as which workplace will has all these regulations and rules like person
from government has clarified all the terms. In my opinion, every employee can sustain in workplace
for good period of time. These are basic learning’s from this role model as employees should be
guided fair by the managers with true guidelines to establish healthy environment where they can
get leaves and should be paid of overtime they have worked in the company. They are the
motivators and active players in growth of the workplace. Every month there should be bonus or
incentive to be paid if they performed well from time to time. The managers should lead with vision
and ideas to be generated for employee benefits. Managers should be updated with rules and
regulations of the government which is represented by Fair Works Ombudsman. Minimum wage is
minimum amount which is to be paid to employee for the work he has performed in the workplace.
The manager should pay him minimum wages and extra sick leaves or annual leaves for growth.
Appreciations and extra fringe benefits should be provided to attain targets and goals of the
workplace. So, these are the key learning from my experience at coffee shop.
