Introduction
As opined by Guest (2017), the notion of employee health and wellbeing had gained a
substantial amount of prominence in the contemporary times because of the correlation that it
had with the concepts of employee and organizational performance. More importantly, the
effective usage of this plan helps the organizations to reduce the work stress faced by the
employees and also to improve their mental and physical health. This report will evaluate the
concept of employee wellbeing and health in the particular context of the organization
Kuwait Airlines. The report, thus, begins by providing an overview of the different
stakeholders of the organization under discussion here and also the manner in which the
construct of employee health and wellbeing program followed by the organization affects
them. The report next discusses the primary and secondary data which has been collected for
the analysis of the program and an analysis of this data has also been conducted. The report
also offers a health and wellbeing plan as recommendation which the organization can utilize
to further enhance the health and wellbeing of the different stakeholders who are associated
with them. Finally, a short reflection is being offered regarding the manner in which the
contents of this assignment will be used by me during my professional work.
Stakeholder analysis
The major stakeholders of the organization Kuwait Airlines are the employees of the
concerned organization and also the passengers or the customers who take the help of the
airline services offered by it (Kuwaitairways.com 2019). Zheng et al. (2015) are of the
viewpoint that one of the most essential requirements of the different employees of an
organization is adequate health and wellbeing measures which will not only ensure reduces
the stress faced by the employees but at the same time enhances the productivity level of the
employees as well. As opined by Ilies, Aw and Lim (2016), this is important from the

perspective of the organizations since the individual productivity of the different employees
of an organization is directly related to the overall productivity or the performance of the
concerned organization. It is in the light of these aspects that the organization Kuwait
Airlines has initiated its employee health and wellness program as so to ensure the fact that
the employees are healthy and have the required or the optimal health condition to work in
the organization (Baranik et al. 2017). More importantly, the wellness and the health program
of the organization under discussion here even extend to the stakeholders or the customers of
the organization as well. This can be explained on the basis of the fact that if the organization
does not take into consideration the health and the wellbeing of the customers then this is
likely to adversely affect the satisfaction level of the customers which in turn will affect their
loyalty towards the organization (Ogbonnaya et al. 2017). Thus, it can be said that the health
and wellness program of the organization under discussion here has been designed taking into
effective consideration all the stakeholders of the concerned organization.

the theoretical frameworks and also models
which are related to the construct of
employee health and wellness.
Data analysis
As opined by Pescud et al. (2015), the focus of the contemporary business enterprises
is on the aspect of profitability and the employees of an enterprise play a pivotal role because
of the fact that they are building blocks of the enterprise. Skagen and Collins (2016) have
articulated the viewpoint that the individual productivity of the employees or the workers of
an organization is directly related to the overall organizational productivity of an organization
and this is perhaps one of the major reasons why the majority of the organizations are
focusing on the satisfaction of the employees. In this regard, it needs to be said that there are
various factors which affect the job productivity or the performance level of the employees,
namely, job design, leadership style followed by the organization, motivation, wellbeing,
health of the employees, organizational culture and others (Burns, Butterworth and Anstey
2016).
According to Van De Voorde and Jensen (2016), one of the most important factors
which affect the job productivity of the employees or the workers of an organization is the
entity of the employee wellness and health. This is important because of the fact that if the
employees are not physically fit or in a condition to perform the work within an organization

which is required of them then the overall performance or the productivity of the concerned
organization is likely to get affected. More importantly, recent researches have revealed the
fact that the organizations which have more number of physically as well as emotionally fit
employees or workers are likely to perform in a much better manner than the ones with lower
number of physically and emotionally fit employees (Eriksen 2018). For example, it is seen
that the employees who are physically as well as emotionally fit are more likely to handle
stress or pressure in a much better manner and it is likely that these entities will not affect the
work performed by them (Pi, Chiu and Lin 2016). Furthermore, a person who is both
physically and emotionally fit is more likely to feel positive and also confident towards the
work or the job that he or she is performing. This aspect is directly related to the factor of
organizational culture since this positive attitude of the workers is likely to positive affect the
organizational culture of the organization which in turn will enhance the job productivity of
the workers (Salman et al. 2016). In addition to these, it is seen that physically as well as
emotionally fit are more likely to enjoy the work that they perform and are better team
players which actually is a positive factor from the perspective of the organizations (Lawton
and Fujiwara 2016). More importantly, they also reduce the leaves taken by the employees on
the score of medical problems, enhance the engagement level among the different employees
and thereby help the organization in the longer run (Eriksen 2018).
Bor et al. (2016) are of the viewpoint that the organizations from the different parts of
the world end up spending more than 11% of the profit earned by them on the various kinds
of health and wellness compensations that they offer to the employees in case of medical
problems faced by them. The net result of this is that the different organizations are
increasingly resorting to the use of different kinds of health and wellness plans or programs
to reduce the expense incurred by them on the score of health and wellness compensations
(Van De Voorde and Jensen 2016). This holds true in the context of the airlines industry as

8EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND WELLBEING
well wherein the companies or the organizations need to spend a substantial amount of the
profit earned by it so as to ensure the wellbeing of their employees. In this regard, it needs to
be said that the airlines industry more than any other industry of the world requires the
complete attention as well as the mental and physical fitness because of the nature of work
that the employees are required to perform. For example, one small mistake committed by the
pilots while they are flying the airplanes can have catastrophic results for the passengers and
also for the reputation and the brand image of the concerned organization (Ogbonnaya et al.
2017). This is perhaps one of the major reasons why the airlines industry is one of the highest
spending organizations on health care and wellness expenses for the employees or other
stakeholders. The below given figure offers an overview of the gross capital spent by the
different organizations related to the airlines industry-
Figure 1: Capital spent by airlines organizations on employee’s health and wellness
Source: (Eriksen 2018)
In the particular context of Kuwait, it needs to be said that diabetes and physical
inactivity are the two major health problems that the majority of the people are currently
suffering from (Guest 2017). In addition to these two, there are several other problems that

9EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND WELLBEING
the people are susceptible to, namely, obesity, breathing problems, depression, anxiety, heart
problems and others (Pescud et al. 2015). The below given figure offers an overview of the
commonly faced health problems by the people of Kuwait and also the age brackets in which
they are more predominant-
Figure 2: Health issues faced by the people of Kuwait as per their age
Source: (Guest 2017)
As opined by Baranik et al. (2017), these health issues faced by the people of Kuwait
not only affect their personal as well as family lives but at the same time their professional or
work life as well by significantly limiting their activities and also capabilities. Thus, it
becomes all the important for the organizations related to the airlines industry to take the help
of various kinds of measures for the addressing these health and wellness issues faced by the
people. It is precisely here that the various health and wellness programs or plan of the
various organizations become important. In this regard, it needs to be said that the primary
purpose of the different health and wellness programs is to help the individuals to cope with
these health issues and also to have the kind of physical as well as mental fitness which is
demanded by the concerned industry (Burns, Butterworth and Anstey 2016). However, it is

seen that these health and wellness programs is not being seen in the positive light and the
below given figure indicates the attitude of the employees in the airlines industry towards
these health and wellness plans-
Figure 3: Attitude of employees in the airlines industry towards employee health and
wellness programs
Source: (Ogbonnaya et al. 2017)
According to Skagen and Collins (2016), one of the most important aspects of the
different employee health and wellness plans is the fact that they should be in synchronicity
with the needs of the profession and also with the kind of health or wellness problems that the
employees are commonly facing. The net result of this is that the different organizations
related to the airlines industry in addition to the medical or health insurance they have to offer
to the employees as per the mandate of the national government also take the help of different
kinds of measures to enhance the physical as well as the mental fitness of the employees
(Lawton and Fujiwara 2016). Some of the most important measures in this regard are regular
medical check-ups, yoga sessions, recreational events and others (Salman et al. 2016). In
addition to these, it is seen that the organizations related to the airlines industry are taking the

help of the construct of flexible shift timings, on-site fitness programs, encouraging the
employees to eat healthy food and others (Bor et al. 2016). It is pertinent to note that these
measures are being following by the Kuwait Airlines as part of their employee health and
wellbeing program.
Conclusion
To conclude, the different employee health and wellness programs have become an
integral part of the diverse business enterprises because of the plethora of benefits that it
offers to the concerned enterprises. Some of the most important benefits offers by these
programs are they help the employees to be physically as well as mentally fit, they reduce
leaves, enhance the positivity and confidence level of the employees, improve organizational
culture, employee job productivity and others. However, at the same time it needs to be said
that because of the different kind of work that the different employees of an organization
performs thus the organization needs to formulate an overall health and wellbeing which will
take into consideration the requirements of all these diverse employees of the organization. I
am of the viewpoint that these are the major reasons why the majority of the organizations
related to the airlines industry like Kuwait Airlines are increasingly taking the help of this
construct. More importantly, it is seen that taking the help of this construct the organization
Kuwait Airlines had made on-site fitness programs, yoga sessions, encouraging the
employees to eat healthy food products and others so as to make the employees physically as
well as mentally fit.

Reflection
I would like to say that the knowledge regarding employee health and wellbeing that I
gained through this assignment and also through the entire is likely to help during the course
of my professional career. For example, through this assignment I got to know the manner in
which the construct of employee wellbeing and health is directly to their job productivity and
other aspects of the organization in which they are working for. Furthermore, I firmly believe
in the fact that the employees are the basic entities of an organization and the overall
productivity of the organization depends on the individual performances of the employees.
Thus, this will provide me with a tool to enhance the job productivity of the employees in an
effective manner and thereby contribute towards the growth of the organization that I would
be working in a positive manner. More importantly, I also came to know about the manner in
which the organizations need to take into effective consideration the emotional, mental and
physical health and wellbeing of the different employees of their organization who perform
diverging work-roles within the health and wellbeing plan that they have formulated.
Therefore, I would say that gaining an effective understanding of this construct will form an
integral part of CPD.
