What are the different factors that causes employee motivation?
What is the relationship between employee motivation and performance appraisal at
Domino's?
Ethical issues
Prior approval: It is important to take permission from the employees. Further, no data
must be collected through coercion or undue influence from the respondents that have
been chosen to conduct the present research.
Privacy and confidentiality: The information that has been collected from the
respondents will not be revealed and will be kept confidential. Further, information
regarding name, age and gender will not be disclosed with the aim to keep the data
confidential.
Literature review
Factors responsible for employee motivation
According to Jahanshani, A. A. and et.al., 2014, employee motivation is the intensity of
energy and commitment that workers end to bring in their jobs. Managing and inspiring
employees at the workplace helps in increasing employee satisfaction. Even if the economy is
shrinking, the main concern of the management is to motivate their employees to work.
Motivation can be provided in the form of monetary and non-monetary. Non-monetary
motivation can be in the form of encouragement or appreciation. However, monetary motivation
can be in the form of bonus, performance appraisal etc.
According to Allen and Wilburn (2012), employee motivation helps in increasing the
productivity of the organization. There are two types of motivation, they are, extrinsic motivation
and intrinsic motivation. Extrinsic motivation is through external factors such as rewards or
punishment. However, intrinsic motivation is through internal factors which comes from within
an employee. In contrast to this, as per the views of Bowling, Hendricks and Wagner (2010),
extrinsic factors are more long lasting than that of intrinsic one and hence its adoption is the
organization is important.
Relationship between employee motivation and performance appraisal
According to Carmeli (2013), performance appraisal plays an important role in the life of
employees. It serves as a motivational tool through which employees work effectively to achieve
the goals of the organization. Rewarding them at that time motivates them to work harder
3

towards the objectives. It also helps in maintaining cordial relationship between the employer
and employee which motivates the employer to take appropriate actions for the employee.
However, in contrast to this, as per the views of Performance Appraisal (2017), employee
performance appraisal is an appropriate career development tool for the managers as well as
employees. It motivates them to take responsibilities and perform their task in a well defined
manner. It promotes teamwork and discussing with the employees how his performance have
been able to affect the productivity of entire organization helps in making him motivated
regarding the same. Reward system by the top level management is designed based on it where
monetary and non monetary benefits are given to the employees for their effective performance.
Proposed research methodology
Type of investigation
The present study on employee motivation is a descriptive type of research design. The
data will be collected without bringing any change to the environment. The collected data will
help in assessing the role of performance appraisal in employee motivation. In order to fulfil the
requirement there is a need to understand the current performance appraisal system followed by
Domino's before jumping to any conclusion. It will help in getting overall idea of implication of
performance appraisal on employees' motivation. Hence, descriptive method of study will be best
suited in the current study.
Data collection methods
There are two main sources of data collection, which are, primary source and secondary
source. Both the methods of data collection will be used in order to conduct the present study on
employee motivation. In order to serve the purpose, primary method of data collection will be
used where data will be collected through questionnaire method. A set of closed ended
questionnaire will be prepared to gain specific results. On the other hand secondary sources of
data collection will include information collected through books, journals, online sources, blog
posts etc (Cassell and Symon, 2010). Adequate knowledge can be generated regarding concept
of motivation and performance appraisals. It will be helpful in collecting latest and useful
information which will further help in conduction of the study in effective and efficient manner.

Sampling methods
Sampling is considered as the most important factor while conducting the research.
Appropriate choice of sample helps in reaching to the desired conclusion for the study. In the
present dissertation, random probability sampling method will be used (Silverman, 2016.). It is
not possible to collect the data from whole of the population. Hence, adequate amount of sample
will be chosen randomly in order to serve the purpose of the study. The method will also prove
to be feasible for the researcher. The sample will be chosen from the employees as they are the
best people who can give a clear idea regarding motivation policy of Dominos.
In the present study, equal chance of selection will be given to the data set. Hence,
sample will be of 50 employees working in Domino's. They are the best people who can help in
assessing their motivation level with the current performance appraisal policy followed by
Domino's.
Data analysis
After the collection of data from 50 employees of Domino's, quantitative method of data
analysis will be used to reach on to the effective results. Under quantitative method, statistical
tool, that is, SPSS will be used to analyse the data.
Significance of research
The research is significant enough as it will help in exploring the concept of employee
motivation and its link to performance appraisal. It will help in delivering the content related to
stated topic (Agnihotri, R. and et.al., 2016). It will help in ascertaining the ways through which
staff turnover ratio can be reduced. The research will also be helpful to the academicians who are
preparing their thesis on similar topic. Different organization will also able to learn to regard
strategies that can be adopted by them to improve employee motivation.
Research limitations
While conducting a research, there are various limitations that need to be faced by the
researcher. Some of these limitations are mentioned below:
Prolonged process: The process of research is long and hence require adequate amount
of time so that all the important points are pin pointed in the dissertation. Data collection
and analysis process also require time as various tools and techniques are required to be
used by the researcher (Taylor, Bogdan and DeVault, 2015). Hence, delay in the overall
research can reduce its significance and deviate the results as well.

Availability of insufficient secondary information: The present study on employee
motivation will require adequate knowledge regarding the subject matter. However, some
important information can not be collected due to restricted access to some website. This
can barricade the secondary information to the researcher (Flick, 2015).
Biased behaviour of the researcher: The biasness from the side of researcher can affect
the results. It can be performed while designing the questionnaire which can deviate the
conclusion and overall result of the research.
Project schedule
Project schedule help in making the assessment of how much time will be required to
conduct the research and reach on to the effective conclusion (Brandenburg and et.al, 2014). It
has been analysed that a total of 14 weeks will be required to conduct the research and submit it
to the concerned authority. The table formulated below helps in outlining the chapter of the
dissertation and duration that will be required to complete each chapter:
