AI Summary
This report analyzes energy conservation efforts in Juneau and Encinitas, two cities with differing demographics and energy consumption patterns. It examines the impact of behavioral and technological changes in Juneau, such as the adoption of compact fluorescent lamps and public awareness campaigns, in response to an energy crisis. The report contrasts Juneau's industrialized nature with Encinitas's coastal, less-industrialized setting, highlighting differences in energy resources, transportation, and overall energy usage. It details the similarities and differences between the cities, focusing on population, demographics, energy consumption, transport facilities, and city type. The report concludes by emphasizing the significance of Juneau's conservation measures and their potential implications globally, advocating for wider adoption of effective strategies like creating awareness among people and reducing electricity load from various systems.

ENERGY AND BUILDING 1
Answer 1: The demand for energy was reduced to a certain extent because of adoption of
several actions which can be classified into Behavioural and technological
Technological changes-
The stores started piling up their inventory with insulation and power strips to
conserve the electricity.
The temperature of room was also lowered in electrically heated buildings.
The Juneau citizens installed compact fluorescent lamps
Behavioural Changes-
Many local organizations along with citizens of Juneau launched a campaign to
spread awareness about measures of conservation and also about encouraging any
subsequent actions required.
There were many tourists who were expected to visit Juneau that summer. So citizens
planned to educate and alert them so as to take their cooperation to save energy
(Rinkinen, J. 2013).
The Citizens of Juneau reduced their usage of lights and started keeping it off when
not in use.

Answer 2: Encinitas is a coastal city located in southern California and has small population
size. Encinitas is similar to Juneau in the sense that it is also located near the sea area and the
standard of living and lifestyle of people are almost same in both the cities. The food habits,
weather conditions and other demographic factors are very similar to each other. However,
Encinitas is considered as more fascinating than Juneau. Even though Juneau is more
cosmopolitan it is also more crowded, and crowded places are more stressful in terms of
Energy consumption, resource utilizing, employment etc. Similarly, Encinitas being a tourist
attraction is definitely more expensive than Juneau but still is more beautiful. For example,
while Juneau has more bustling streets, the streets in Encinitas are quieter and narrower.
Encinitas being an island and coastal city surrounds itself with crops, mines and forests. In
addition to this, energy resources and transportation facilities are lesser in Encinitas than
Juneau. Therefore, due to lack of any kind of industrialized setup near Encinitas, very less
amount is spent on energy and transportation as compared to Juneau. Most people in
Encinitas are engaged in farming and other agricultural activities. Whereas people in Juneau
have good opportunities to work in corporates and industries. This also gives a picture that in
Juneau the energy consumption is high as compared to Encinitas which may conclude that the
requirement to conserve energy in Juneau is more as compared to Encinitas. The main
difference between the two cities centres around three main criteria which are City census,
transport facilities and opportunities and number of industries. Thus few similarities and
differences between Juneau and Encinitas are depicted below in tableau form which
overarches the significance of measures adopted by Juneau and their implications over whole
world.

ENERGY AND BUILDING 3
Similarities and Differences between Juneau and Encinitas
Criteria/indicators
for Comparisons
Juneau Encinitas
Population More, therefore more stressful in
terms of environment and work life.
Less, therefore less stressful in terms
of work life and environment
Demographics Industrialized area and thus high
standard of living.
Non-Industrialized area and
therefore medium to low standard of
living.
Energy
Consumption
More as people use many sources
which use energy like transport
facilities, electricity, in office
infrastructure
Less as people use minimum sources
which consume energy like transport
facilities are mainly through air or
ships.
Transport Facilities Mainly through air and ships but
use road facilities also
Almost through air and ships only.
City type Coastal City Island, similar to coastal city.
There is a group in Juneau called the council for developing the economy of Juneau which
leaded the campaign for Energy Conservation by branding it with a slogan and a logo using
many human resources like merchants, politicians, heads of non-profit welfare etc. But due to
lack of any such Council in Encinitas, there is a possibility that the awareness campaign can
be less efficient to impact the energy conservation issues in Encinitas. However targeting the
Streetlights, conserving cold and hot water and use of appliances like fluorescent lamps,
insulation and power strips can overarch the issue of conserving electricity. People in Juneau
undertook an unprecedented conservation campaign. Individuals turned off lights, lowered
room temperatures in electrically-heated buildings, and installed compact fluorescent lamps.

ENERGY AND BUILDING 4
The city’s stores quickly ran out of insulation, fluorescent lamps, power strips, and other
materials needed to conserve electricity. Two weeks after the avalanche the city, along with
various local organizations, launched a coordinated campaign to disseminate information
about the most effective conservation measures and to encourage further actions. Special
programs were developed to target vulnerable groups. The city also planned to alert and
educate the one million tourists expected to visit Juneau that summer on cruise liners so that
they would not be deterred by darkened stores and to cooperate in conservation efforts. The
approach considered by Juneau can be implied on global basis as the measures are really
impactful to conserve the energy and encourages the citizens to react in an informative way
as done by Juneau citizens who have learnt that creating awareness among people regarding
energy conservation like use of fluorescent lamps, insulation and power strips, reducing the
load of electricity from airport, sewage and water supply system can be few among the many
effective ways (Rinkinen, J. 2013).
