ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT AND SUSTAINABLE FUTURE

Reflective on Engineering Sustainability 1
Sustainability engineering tends to define the role that must be played by the
engineers now and in the future. The need of this sustainability has arisen because of the huge
environmental changes like global warming. Other than this, the depletion of the natural
resources due to human usage and the increased number of population adds to this factor. It is
really necessary for the current generation to utilize each of these resources in such a way that
they do not hamper the well-being of the future generation. The use of non-biodegradable
resources like plastics by the current generation would be creating a huge pressure on the
sustainability of the future generation. In order to sustain the future generation would require
all the resources that the current generation is putting into use (Alwi et al., 2014). If the
present generation use them unnecessarily or waste them then it would be creating a huge
pressure on the coming generation. So it becomes our responsibility to ensure that the future
generation is not deprived of a well-balanced future. It is through sustainability Engineering
that the engineers can ensure that all the resources are being utilized in a justified manner.
There needs to be a systematic way in which things can be done so that we can prevent this
earth from becoming barren or losing its atmosphere.

Topic 1: Environmental Ethics for Engineers
Earlier engineers concentrated more on the technicalities and they provided solutions
on the basis of it. Now with the passage of time and even as the need has arisen, engineers are
taking ethical issues into consideration. These ethical issues cater to the social and the ethical
impacts that a work of engineering might have. It can be defines as the principles of morality
that they take into consideration in the process of decision making. Environmental ethics

takes a few more things under consideration. It is not always how the engineers would be
working for the benefit of the environment but at the same time it looks into the decisions of
the engineer (Gunn, 2017). If an engineer refuses to work near a nuclear field, this too would
fall under the terms of his environmental ethics. The engineers nowadays are vested with the
responsibility to ensure safety, welfare of the society and prevent health issues. Decision
making is an equally important aspect of environmental ethics when it comes to engineers. It
is one wrong decision that can result in severe issues to the environment but a proper and
tactful decision can help in ensuring a better future. An ethical decision can help in attaining
a sustained future.
