English will continue to be the Global Language for academia and business. Discuss.
Discussion
English has been accepted globally as the language of choice amongst scholarly journals and
business conferences. With the rising of the trend, the academia and business field are not left
with the choice and all the works and business deals are published in the English language so as
to attain global recognition. Therefore English is emerging out to be an opportunity and a threat.
The work will be appreciated and circulated in the whole international community and if not then
the academia and business sector will experience a sense of deprivation of the opportunity
(Bakopoulos, 1997).
The conversation taking place without a common platform (virtual or real) and language
amongst the academicians and business partners from differing nationalities would not be
possible. The future of academia and business is seen to be largely dependent on the
communication and correlation among the nations and therefore there is a dire need for a
language for international communication. However, selecting a single language as an
international or global language results in rejection and dismissal of the national languages,
which would not be acceptable for the nations (Ter-Minasova 2014: 9).
English has been considered as the most important language in the increasing international
community and has attained the position of the official language of the scientific, academic and
business world. Many authors have suggested that the logical structure of English and lack of
grammatical gender is one of the reasons for its global success. English has successfully being
used in the domains like education, economics, politics, press, communication, etc. and a critical
mass has been represented by the number of people using English, making its use to be
unstoppable (Graddol, D., 2004).

Further, English has been used as the primary working language in the field of international
affairs especially of the organisations like the UN, the British Commonwealth, the Association of
South East Asian Nations, the European Union, the Council of Europe and the NATO). Further
the international organisation with Spanish-speaking or the Arabic-speaking countries are also
seen to issue final reports in English (Nesterenkoa, V.S., Vychuzhaninaa, E.V. and Milovanovaa,
O.I., 2015)
Why is English considered to be a global language?
The selection of any language as the global language is always determined by the factors like
international market specialisation, demographic shifts, and new forms of communication,
urbanisation and others. All these factors have been helpful in understanding the use of the
monolith and united model of English language.
This can be understood by the geographical-historical reasons and socio-cultural reasons. The
position of English and its prominence can be understood by the geographical-historical, and its
expansion can be viewed from the socio-cultural aspect. The historical movement of English all
over the world with their successful expeditions in American and Asia proved to be a vital step
forward for the English language. The widespread use of English in literary works, business
meetings, conference TV, etc. have led to its expansion.
Any language, in order to become the international language, must have power people especially
powerful military and political leaders. The United States is a militarily powerful nation for
establishing their language along with the strong economic position for maintaining and
expanding it. With the immense growth in the business and competitive industry, an explosion
was felt in the international markets and education. It is imperative for the language to achieve
global status at the stage of the explosion in the international activity. By the nineteenth century,

Britain becomes the leading trading and industrial country, and the population of USA
approached 100 million with the fastest growing economy in the world. The world's presence of
English was maintained and expanded due to the economic supremacy of America (Crystal
2003: 59). This led to all the literary work, education system, business conference, etc. to be
published in English. Now the need for a global language is appreciated by the business and the
internal academic communities and by the individual due to the heavy impact of globalisation.
English as global language
Using English as a global language can assist in developing the business relations and helps in
increasing the economic growth of the country by maintaining good international
communication. Therefore, the companies with employees and the literary authors with good
command over English have a major global presence and have a competitive edge as compared
to their rivals.
From the social perspective, the business and authors can access the entry to the wider cultural
world helping them to maintain good relations with other people. This aspect will eventually
help in building a foundation for social relations and good business. With English being accepted
as the language for communication, a common platform is provided, and the gap present between
people and communication can be narrowed down. All the business meetings, the launch of
literary work is being done using the global language so as to reach the global platform. The use
of English can help people to communicate with people present in almost all part of the world.
Even though the native speaker of Spanish, Chinese and Hindi are comparatively large in
number, English is the most widely spoken language, respecting its wide acceptance all over the
world.

People might get difficult in being heard while attending interactions, conferences, etc. as the
employee would not able to speak and express powerfully. This will lead to less amount of
creditability among the individuals be it as a result of ethnic, linguistic, status, gender or age
difference. Business communities will be seen to have less access to the decision-making process
if they are linguistically less confident (Ozdemir, N.O., 2014)
But the drawbacks of English as a global language cannot be ignored. The nations are seeing the
adoption of the universal language as the westernisation of the culture. The widespread use of the
English had led to neglecting of nation’s own language and their own indigenous dialects and
cultures. However, one should point that the benefits of English as a global language are
outweighing the disadvantages.
Future of global language
The widespread of English beyond their personal country barrier has led to erosion of the “one
country, one language” concept. On imaging the near future, everyone will entertain the idea that
English will be spoken by the entire world. Various people also share the belief that English will
be adjourned as the world language and will exclude other. But with the change in emerging
factors, one can imagine that English will go on to play a critical role in the academia and
business communities but will also give rise to a new generation of bilingual and multilingual
speakers. This can be presented with the emergence of Spanish in the United States as the first
step towards bilingualism.
The global language system has been continuously going a rapid change owing to the
international communication, demographic trends and new technology. These factors are
determinant in affecting the spoken and written communication. English, although a global
language is not seen as the dominant language in the future and therefore a need to be

multilingual is experienced. Although the languages are getting extinct due to the prevalent use
of English, new ones are also seen to be emerged in extended social groups and communities.
The researchers like Seidlhofer have repeatedly questioned the belief of creation of a linguistic
issue due to the emergence of English, and the assumptions of choosing between English and the
native language is highly prevalent amongst the European. The Western countries are also
experiencing an overwhelming process due to an elimination of identity factors like gender,
national and religious.
The prime purpose of the Europeans and Westerns is the concept of freedom. They are willing to
defend their culture and languages so as to keep their identities intact. This will make a
favourable impact on the factors like demographic etc. and play a vital role to keep up their
language and culture (Graddol, D., 2004). In the near future, it can be seem that people will be
fluent in more than one language and will switch to the language of their ease in their business
and literary communities as per their convenience. This will lead to the problem in existence of
monolingual English speakers forcing them to adapt to the multilingual society.
