Intended Learning. By the end of this lesson students will be able to:
Analyse the character of the story, and describe their actions. They will also be able to
interpret the literary devices like the imagery, simile and onomatopoeia in the text. The
grammar of the text should also be clear to them for instance the noun, pronoun, tenses
and interaction skills possible with the language. The children will most importantly be able
to relate the character Toby and feel his grief. They would also be able to compare the
characters with other similar texts and have a perspective on the topic. By the end of the
lesson, they will learn a story which will help them to understand the presence of various
challenges and how to deal with it, just the way Toby does when his sister died. The
students will also be able to know the extreme condition of emotions that one has to face in
a lifetime – grief, love, belongingness and other.

The materials and resources utilised for this unit is the picture book Leave Taking by
Lorraine Marwood. Other than that, classroom posters for the picture book Taking Leave
