SELF ASSESSMENT
An academic writer, in my opinion, is someone who can present an idea or a point of view
through logically lucid and concise vocabulary. The strength of the writer reflects from the way
the main idea of the context is put into words effectively, that it captivates the attention of the
reader instantly. The major challenge with academic writing seems to be representation through
the most suitable choice of words. Effective vocabulary and synonymous proficiency in language
is an upper hand that helps in excelling in the context.
The Needs analysis covered the dynamics of language proficiency gaps though an effective
questionnaire. It helped me to question self-beliefs about the English language and my native
too. It took a lot of introspection to mark the answers honestly. The Needs analysis has allowed
me to bring forward areas that clearly indicate a scope of improvement. The analysis of the test
brings forward one major goal, that I intend to achieve this semester, which is Vocabulary
construction. Finding the right set of words while in a conversation is the key to a better
communication and that is why I find speaking a little more challenging. Also, as a passionate
academic writer, the versatility in writing words is something that I ought to develop, to make
my content more approachable.
The learnings from the semester has enhanced my ability to understand the words more deeply.
Now, when I encounter a new word, I make sure that I cover it with synonymous and
antonymous researches. The semester readings presented a large number of language words that
I came to register for myself as a new addition. Therefore, the learnings from the semester added
to my need of vocabulary building.
Recently, during one of the conversations with my friend, while we were discussing a certain
idea, I found that my vocabulary set had surplus options. It was because I had been reading a
variety of texts regarding the context under discussion. My set of words contained inspirations
from internet, textbooks, journals and other words used by people I spoke to about the same
topic. This made me realize that the larger bandwidth I have in reading, the greater power I
would have while speaking, and the readings from the semester has very profoundly enhanced
my vocabulary set, helping me to meet my needs analysis goal to a certain extent.

This occurrence of availability of the words in an active and instantaneous conversation made me
perform an analysis of what all can I continue to expand my overall vocabulary set. I want to
develop my ability to speak, write and communicate precisely with the right set of words.
Realizing this I looked back into the recent habits of mine and identified that I had been writing
certain points and ideas, not in a formal way though, to enhance my writing skills. Little did I
know that a fun activity would leave a greater impact on my skill set. The unconscious writing,
with less attention to formats and more to idea representation, even as bullet points or random
journaling would make my causal conversations so effective. Writing randomly also allowed me
to have a structured method of conveying my opinion on topics, as it helped me prioritize my
thoughts. I believe this factor had a major impact on my proficiency development as a writer as
well.
The entire semester had been a journey of introspection and surprises derived from self-analysis.
It is a stunning observation from self that the fun activities can help build a skill so conveniently.
Had I focused on formats and proper methods, probably the effects of the outcome would not be
so rapid. Therefore, I intend to continue using the same idea, to develop my vocabulary. I would
continue the habit of random reading and would also try to practice writing in any format that I
would find interesting, to ensure that ideas and words that I captured gets noted down
somewhere. I would also try to look back to these notes from time to time, to have a quick
walkthrough of the words and the way any point has been referenced.
I am intending to develop the vocabulary as I understand the importance of language in both
personal and professional communication. I also recognize that speaking and writing are both
important elements and having a good vocabulary is the key to success. I will ensure that I
continue the newly realized habits that are not only fun but also skill building.
