Introduction
American Psychological Association (APA) Referencing Style Guide used to compile an
accurate reference list of the items. The purpose of referencing is to show that the content
written is researched and used as an idea of others to present the subject and argument.
Referencing prevents plagiarizing as it gives credit to the author whose information and ideas are
being used in the research. Any information which reflects someone else's idea, and which is not
referenced would be a breach of ethics and technically stealing from other writer or author. APA
is common Referencing Style that is followed by students to reference an idea, a paraphrased
quote, to make an argument or to use a direct quote.
I. A single author textbook
Textbooks can have one author, two author or multiple authors. APA Referencing Style
has different guidelines for each. For a single author textbook, the APA referencing is as follows:
Simmons, B.A. (2011). International Studies in the Global Information Age. International
Studies Quarterly, 55(3), 589–599.
II. A multi-author textbook
For one, two authors or three to five authors, the author surname, initials., & author
surname, initials need to be included. For a multi-author textbook, there are more than three
authors.
Morales-Hidalgoa, P., Hernández-Martínez, C, Veraa, M., Voltas, N. and Canals, J.
( 2016). Psychometric properties of the Conners-3 and Conners Early Childhood Indexes
in a Spanish school population. International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology,
30(1), 1–12.

If there are six or more authors, all the authors names need to be there in the reference list
but for intext referencing, the first author followed by et al. is to be used.
III. A chapter from an edited text
At times the student has to use a chapter of a book. It is essential to acknowledge the
author of the chapter and the author of the book. The name of the editor is placed after the title of
the chapter. However, for intext referencing, the author of the chapter needs to be acknowledged.
Edwards, P. N. (2010). A Vast Machine: Computer Models, Climate Data, and the Politics of
Global Warming. Massachusetts Institute of Technology, 1(2), 139-186.
IV. A journal article
Taylor, M., Lamm, A. J. & Rampold, S. D. (2018). Using the six Americas framework to
communicate and educate about global warming. Journal of Agricultural Education,
59(2), 215–232.
In journal titles, the first letter of the title is capitalized.
V. An online Government publication
Australian National Botanic Gardens. (2001). Australian Mosses Online, Department of the
Environment Retrieved from http://www.anbg.gov.au/abrs/Mosses_online/index.html
It is seen that the author of government publications is often a department or agency and
if there is no obvious author for the government publication, then the department or agency name
is to be used as the author.
