Reading comprehension skills and retention will be very helpful in enhancing their
understanding as well as remembering power. This will ultimately lead to improving higher
order skills such as analysing and evaluating. There are different types of tools and technique
used by a person to improve their reading comprehension and retention skills. A person should
deal with various challenges and try to enhance these skills.

Reading comprehension skills as well as retention play a crucial role in improvement of
students. It is very important that each and every student has comprehensive and retention skills
so that they can achieve desired academic goals (McKeown and Curtis, 2014). There are various
techniques that could be used by an individual in order to enhance their comprehensive as well as
retention skills. This report includes the role of building comprehension and retention for a
student in order to improve leading quality as well as enhance academic accomplishment. It also
includes the different obstacles or challenges that are pertaining to building comprehension and
retention.

Literature review
A. Description of current research on comprehension:
Comprehension and retention play a crucial role in overall growth and development of
individual. Reading comprehension can be describe as a ability to understand as well as
process meaning of written text or word. This is very helpful in improving understanding as
well as knowledge of a person. Important role of comprehension as well as retention for
students are mention below in detail.
Improving reading skills – By reading more and more comprehension a student will be
able to improve their reading skills. This will help in developing mind set as a person will be
able to read written words. Reading in the fundamental requirement in today world and
comprehension will help in improving students reading skills.
Enhancing understand - Comprehension and retention is very helpful in improving the
understanding of a person. When a student is reading more comprehension frequently they
will be able to understand the text in better manner (Jacoby and Hoyer, 2013). Reading skill
will lead to create image in mind of person as help in enhancing their understanding. By
reading comprehension related to students subject they will be able to understand the
academic books and subjects in better manner.
Increase analysing skills – Comprehension and retention play a important role in
development of student and individual. This will help in increasing their analysing as well as
analytical skills. When a person is able to read quickly as well as understand the text in better

manner. This will lead to increase their analysing and evaluating skills as well as lead to take

B. Description of current research on information retention:
A person or student will be able to enhance quality of learning as well as achieve desired
goals regarding academic achievement. There are various ways that can be adopted by a
student to improve and build comprehension and retention skills. A student can read about
any topic in which they are interested (Hung and Chen, 2018). Reading about different topic
a person will be able to enhance their knowledge as well as understanding about that topic.
There are various benefits for a student by building comprehension and retention and it will
have significant impact on their academic achievement as well as improving the quality of
learning. A person who is continuously practicing reading compression will have strong
vocabulary and they will have better understanding as well as knowledge. It is very
important they a person read about those topic in which they have interest and they should
be focus towards their reading comprehension (Wijaya, 2015). This is essential in removing
distraction and boredom which lead to increase in comprehension and retention skills. There
are some techniques which can be used by a student or person in order to enhance their skills.
First of all they should have set some purpose or goal reading why they wants to read which
includes what exactly they are interested in reading. This will be very helpful in enhancing
their interest towards comprehension reading. After this they needs to create and develop a
mind map which includes all major concepts of the topic. This will be beneficial in
understanding the topic is better and effective manner. Mind map will lead to converting the
text into visual format and a person will able to understand, remember as well as learn
information about the topic. Once this is done, individual should capture their reactions
(Burgoyne, Whiteley and Hutchinson, 2013). This will help in understanding the results
properly as a it will be represented in the behaviour of an individual. This will lead to
identifying and analysing that purpose is successfully achieved or not.

Academic scores – This will help in improving academic scores of a student as by reading more
comprehension skills a student will be able to improve their academic understanding
knowledge. When a student is able to read and understand more thing clearly they will be
able to perform better in their academics. This will help in improving the academic score of
a student and help them in achieving set academic goals.
Learning ability – Reading with help in improving the ability to learn as when a person in
reading more thing they will be able to understand more. By reading on topic again and
again this will help in memorising it as well as improving learning ability (Kowalski and
Taylor, 2017). It is very important for a person to improve leaning capability to that they can
grab more knowledge.
B. Evaluate the obstacles pertaining to building comprehension and retention
There are various obstacles that are pertaining to building comprehension as well as
retention. It is very important for a individual to overcome these issues and obstacles in order to
enhance their comprehension and retention skills. This will be very helpful in achieving set
academic goals as well as improving their learning ability. Reading comprehension as well as
retention will be very helpful for overall development of an individual or a student. Different
obstacles that is faced by a person are mention below in detail.
Disinterest and boredom – This is one of the common obstacles that arise while building
comprehension as well as retention. Disinterest and boredom is one of the major reason which
lead to poor comprehension and retention. When a topic or content is not interest and they are
bored with it they will not be able to read as well as understand the written words properly.
Visual processing disorder – This disorder has major impact over reading comprehension as
well as retention skill of a person. When a person is not able to visualise the text or word
properly they will not be able to read as well as understand it properly.
Poor memory skills – This will affect learning capability as well as reading comprehension.
When as person has poor memory skill they will not be able to remember the difficult words and

reading comprehensive as well as retention skills.
Limited vocabulary – This is also cause of poor reading comprehension as when a person or
student has limited vocabulary they will not be able to understand the meaning of text. People
will limited vocabulary is poor in reading comprehension and retention as they will get bore
easily when they are not able to understand the meaning properly.
Recommendation
On the bases of above dissuasion as well as analysis there are some recommendations. Its is very
important for a reader to remove below mention challenges in order to enhance their reading
skills and capabilities. Major obstacles that should be removed to enhance reading
comprehension are such as.
Decoding individual words – When a student and person is not able to decode the
written words this can be consider as a major reason of poor comprehension and retention
(Afolabi and et.al., 2014). In this a person will slow down or prevent themselves from reading
comprehension. They are not able to decode an individual word as well as they are not able to
read and understand it properly.
Difficult text – This is a challenge faced by many person and because of difficult word or
text they are not able to read comprehension. This could be because the word is unfamiliar to
them or it can to too complex to understand it. This is very frustration for students and individual
and obstacle for comprehension and reading.
Conclusion
From the above report it can be concluded that reading comprehension as well as retention
are one of the fundamental skills of a student or an individual. This will be very helpful in
improving their knowledge as well as understanding skills. It is very important for an student to
read any comprehension in which they are interest in order to improve their knowledge (Spencer,
Anderson and Ellis, 2013). By reading comprehension related to their studies they will be able to
score good grades at their academics. This will be very helpful in accomplishment of desired
academic goals and objectives.
