INTRODUCTION
Reading and writing are two interrelated cognitive process which enhances the
personality of students. Reading can be defined as the ability of an individual to decode the
symbols which are useful to find the meaning. On the other hand writing is a process of
communicating the thoughts of an individual in a way which can be reconstructed by other users.
This report will focus on improving the reading and writing skills of students (Çetin and
Akkoyunlu, 2017). For this there are various strategies mentioned in this report which will shape
their career towards the success and growth.
MAIN BODY
Strategies for improving reading abilities.
Reading is an essential skill which must be learned by the students which will enhance their
way of thinking. It keeps the mind of students updated and healthy. For improving the reading
abilities of students following strategies can be used:
Predicting Content: This strategy depicts that the students must familiarise themselves
with the content. This involves that the student can predict the content by looking at the
headings and pictures before starting reading (Williams and Beam, 2019). It also includes
that the students must evaluate the following questions before starting reading:
What is the current knowledge of the topic student know?
What do the pictures and headings are depicting the students?
After analysing these questions student can start their reading which will improve their
analytical skills also.
Skimming: It is a technique which is used when the students are in hurry to understand
the concept. This is a process in which students quickly scan the content of reading and
try to grasp it in their minds for future. Usually students tends to read first and last
sentence of the paragraph and sometimes they read the innovative words which is an
effective way of understanding the main message of the paragraph. This technique saves
an individual time by avoiding laborious reading. This method can act as a preview
method in which a reader can only review selected content out of the heavy content
provided. But sometimes a reader can miss important points or have to overlook the
