Practical 3
Aim
In Practical Exercises 1 and 2 you tested and implemented mail systems. We used the
free mail client “Thunderbird” to test mail connectivity.
In this exercise we will investigate, install, configure and review 3 mail clients and
determine which client that you feel would fulfil the needs of email service.
In addition, we will also investigate, install, configure and review 3 clients to VoIP systems
and determine which client that you feel would fulfil the needs of client requirement
This exercise should be completed as an individual activity.
This exercise will be completed within a VMware Workstation Environment.
You must maintain an error log sheet and mention how you troubleshot the issues.
Read the entire activity before starting!!!
Document the steps that you followed in your Journal. Journal must have full
screen and clear screenshots.
Load the Exchange mail server
In this activity we will restore our deployment from Prac 2 in order to test other mail
clients.
The mail server deployment should be completed as an individual activity, so if you have
not developed your own deployment of Exchange Server 2013/2016 then you should do
so now.
 Load your Prac 2 environ
 Test your Prac 2 environ
Activity 1 ( Test Mail Clients)
In this activity we will research, download and install 3 commonly used mail client
programs.
 You have already installed Thunderbird. This counts as one package.
 Using the internet, locate other common mail clients.
 Where appropriate download trial packages.
 Microsoft Outlook should be one of these products.
 Install each client software set.
 Configure the firewall to allow the mail communication with the server

services and table them with pros and cons
 One of these should be Skype.
 Fully evaluate Skype
 Using the internet, locate 2 other common VoIP clients.
 One of these client sets should have number dialling capabilities.
 Note: Where appropriate download trial packages.
 Install and configure each client software set.
 Document the steps that you followed in your Journal.

In this activity you are going to so a small research on data Protection and network
Administration.
Research the following and write a short description on your own wards.
 backup and restoration
 firewall configuration
 security and authentication practices
 load balancing
 server or directory administration
 infrastructure
 Web server administration.
 Portal Applications and the importance of database servers

Backup and restoration
NT Backup was used in windows servers. Windows Backup application is used.
Third party applications like Symantec backup are used in IT industry. Backup
can be cumulative and differential. It can be daily, weekly, monthly and yearly.
Firewall configuration
Firewall can be software firewall (Windows based) and hardware firewall (Cisco
550).
Firewalls are used to secure the network traffic. Firewall checks the data pockets
and allows based on firewall rules.
Security and authentication practices
Applications needs to be secured from inside and outside attacks. The access
needs to be controlled with the help of well-planned authentication practices.
Load balancing
Web servers can be placed in load balancing mode when multiple web servers
are kept together to serve a huge load. Auto loadbalancing techniques are used
in web server load balancing.
Server or directory administration
Server administration is following standard and well planned technical
procedures. Mostly it talks about hardware administration. Directory can be a
database
Web server administration.
Web servers can be managed with the help of control panels. Web Host Manager
/ CPanel are PHP based web control panels

virtual operating systems. Remember to shut down the client workstation first and
then the server operating system

At the end of the practical session, please ensure that you have saved the folders of
the virtual operating systems on to your USB hard disk. Before leaving the lab room
ensure that any software installed on the base OS is removed and that your machine
has been left in a better state than you found it in.
