I was able to carry out an assessment on effects the development of the Western Sydney Airport
will have on the environment and the surrounding communities. I learnt that just like any other
construction project, implementation of the proposed Western Sydney Airport will have both
positive and negative impact on the surrounding communities.
I was able to learn the positive impacts of the construction projects in any given society for
instance the development of Western Sydney Airport is expected to offer arrange of economic
and social benefits to the business, individuals and the entire community through the city of
Sydney where by job opportunities will be created to the local communities. The airport will
attract investments in western Sydney, which will range from logistics and manufacturing to
education, hospitality and other professional services. The airport will enable the business to
have a faster and appropriate access to the foreign markets. The knowledge about the positive
impacts of construction can help in educating the members of the local communities within the
construction sites.
At the same time just like any other construction I gained knowledge on how the construction
projects negatively impact the environment and the surrounding communities. I learnt that the
dust which is produced by machines during the construction process directly contributed to air
pollution and it poses danger to the surrounding communities, in that it can lead to development
of respiration related complications. Also the quality of water will also be lowered by the
construction runoffs and drainage. During the site clearing, site runoffs and drainages will
remain to be the main sources of potential quality effect. The site drainage and runoffs may
contain increased loads of the suspended solids and contaminants. Clearing of vegetation to pave
way for construction is another threat to diversity. There are many health issues related with the

proposed airport. For instance the pollution of water due to the construction drainage and runoff
will have a direct impact on the human health since there is a high possibility of people suffering
from water borne diseases.
I was able to learn different strategies that can be employed to control the negative effects which
construction has on the environment. This will be of great importance to me, since it will equip
me with the necessary knowledge and skills on how to manage construction sites and minimize
the negative effectives it has on the environment. This knowledge will be of great importance in
boosting the efforts being put in place to control global warming and environmental pollution.
