Challenges and Solutions: Murray-Darling Basin Water Management

SUMMARY

According to Alston et al., (2016), the article highlights on the issues related to the river health in
Murray area. There has been a long-time drought with over allocation of water for handling
irrigation and the variability in climate. This has directly led to problem of mount with long term
viability of rivers. The concern is about the social, economic and environmental sectors which
needs to be handled as a result of exploratory research which is conducted with key and high-
level stakeholders. The paper also highlights about the different results to examine the
perceptions which includes the evolvement of the water policy. There are tensions in between the
stakeholders which concerns potential social outcomes and equity. Hence, certain suggestions
are needed for the integrated and transparent governance structures, with common vision of
environmental and social goals.
According to John (2017), the paper highlights on the environmental functioning where the
problems are related to complex system of re-engineering and its adjustment for building
infrastructure. The problems are exposed for a higher variable pricing and demands. This
includes the thrust upon the complex interaction, economic and social systems that have been
addressed for a large over-extraction of water for the agriculture. The public policy returns
stressed rivers and the systems of groundwater for healthy conditions where the flooding plains
are able to regain a major part of the ecological functioning. The results are seen to be altering
the river flow regimes, with rise of salinity in Murray.
