Niko Resources Ltd. and Environmental Disclosure: A Critical Review

This report critically reviews the environmental disclosures of Niko Resources Ltd., focusing on a study examining the company's practices in a developing country. INTRODUCTION
Critical review is the evaluation and summarizing of information and ideas in an article. The
present review is based study which is focused on Environmental incidents in developing
country and corporate environmental disclosures. The article is based on initiative of
multinational gas company that is Niko Resources Ltd.
MAIN BODY
Azizul Islam and Aminul Islam, 2011, aim at examining initiative of Niko Resources Ltd. on
environmental disclosure for which scholar focused on Disclosure strategy of Nike which was
related to public concern pertaining to blowouts. The information in study is based on review of
news article which are limited to environmental incidents of Niko in Bangladesh and
communication media of gas company. Further, it comprises information from annual reports
social responsibility report to understand the impact on local community of Bangladesh.
In accordance with evaluation it has been found that oil and gas company did not provide
any information about non-financial environmental concern in annual report. As per data of press
releases it identified that blowout affected local community. Also, non-financial disclosure of
Niko within a stand-alone report was related with community pressures which was determined
by measurement of negative media coverage on blowouts. However, the negative coverage of
media is supported by information where it is stated that negative coverage depicts that
operations of Niko are creating damaging to the society. Thus, the major limitation of study was
its focus only on non-financial environmental disclosure of Niko which lacks attempt to present
information about company accountabilities for activities in developing country.
CONCLUSION
From the evaluation of study, it is identified that article do not provide information about
local communities who have been affected by blowouts. It concluded with outlining stand-alone
environmental and social report of Niko which was named as Safety, Health, Environmental and
social program which covers information about performance, environment and social initiatives,
employee’s health and safety and plan of Niko.
