Food security refers to having entire access to enough food to meet the dietary
requirements for healthy life. Environmental sustainability is the ability to satisfy the current
needs of the environment without jeopardising the possibilities of the incoming generation.
What can we do to support the important contribution of family farmers to global security?
In both the developed and the third world countries (nine) out of (ten) farms are
managed by families. The support may be given in the following ways; Putting measures to
ensure that they access to land and natural resources. Providing those who are in need with
access to technology and adequate extension of services. Creation of environmental and social
policy interventions in support of the family farms. Recognising and rewarding the numerous
contributions of these family farms. Creation of enabling environment for the practise of
family agriculture (Dawe, 2012).
We can help smallholders protect natural resources by: Education and creation of public
awareness in order to inculcate the culture of environmental and natural resource preservation
and protection. Coming up with alternative sources of energy such as green and solar energy in
order to curb the rate of deforestation which in the long run leads to desertification. Coming up
with conventional regulations aimed at natural resource protection (Fanzo 2014).
How to balance trade-off between food security and environmental sustainability
through; Creation of research institutions, extension services and technology will help in
creating a balance between food security and environmental sustainability. Creation of
conventional regulations aimed at minimizing the trade-offs between food security and
environment. Property rights Unsuitable agricultural practices will be mostly practised in areas

where people involved have no or little property or user rights to the resource being
overexploited.
