Introduction
The purpose of sustainable waste management is to eliminate the consumption of
natural resources. It refers to the materials derived from nature can be reusable at its
maximum rate to reduce the waste production. Lamalice et al., (2018) states that the
environmental policy should be dedicated to provide the extreme quality of construction and
annihilation debris management, recovery of the resources and services of disposal.
Sustainability should not be restricted to any industry as any particular step against
environmental sustainability can bring misfortune for the entire generation.
Discussion
Goyer (2016) mentioned the Supermarket garden Herbs is an initiative that can be
considered as a method to sort waste production. According to the study, the supermarkets
are now catering their own performance to fit in the future food system without
compromising the living of the future generation. IGA in Montreal introduces the first
grocery store that grow crops at their own roof. The name of the supermarket chain is
Quebec’s Saint-Laurent borough located at Montreal, Canada (Haberman et al., 2014). The
city provoked the supermarket to install the green roof over the 25,000 square-foot building.
The owner of the supermarket Richard Duchemin viewed this strategy as an opportunity
instead of considering this as a constraint.
Duchemin created an organic garden producing different types of vegetables
including beet, tomatoes, kale, radishes, lettuce, and herbs. These vegetables are then packed
with disposable materials and sold into the store with comparatively lesser price (Kurdve et
al., 2015). Along with this, this supermarket chain is a home for eight beehives that produce
more than six hundreds of jars of honey annually.

These initiative of sustainable gardening for waste control can be observed in
Brooklyn Grange, New York. Here the IGA is observed with producing organic vegetables in
soil in spite of hydroponic system. These made the vegetable to earn the organic certificate by
the individual auditing body – Ecocert Canada. The installation cost of green roof can be
neglected as there are several environmental and financial benefits associated with this
innovative strategy (Lamalice et al., 2018).
Canada is a developed country that is fully committed to take initiative for protecting
the environment. Not only the supermarkets, but also the sustainable development strategy is
also applicable for all the organizations in Canada (Goyer, 2016). The Government of Canada
is finding different strategies to address the social, financial, and environmental impacts of
sustainability. The sustainable strategy for organizations are provided with the term as
corporate responsibility for sustainability.
Conclusion
As a conclusion, it can be said that, sustainability is an important factor that should be
implemented in every field of living to save the environment from further degradation.
Supermarket Garden Herbs is one of the initiative that covers various aspects of
sustainability. It produces less waste as crops are produced at the own roof of garden of the
supermarket chain. On the other hand, it is producing organic food to their consumers so that
the future generation is saved from the health risks.
