Introduction
The advancement in technology has brought various changes in the professional fields
and one of them is the inclusion of e-portfolio. Like other professions, e-portfolio is used in
the nursing practice (Collins & Crawley, 2016). Here, in this paper, the aim of developing an
e-portfolio along with the platform, materials and relevance to the nursing career will be
discussed. The estimated time of completion and the strategies of usefulness of e-portfolio
will also be analyzed.
Aim of developing the e-portfolio
Portfolio, in digital form is mainly referred to as an e-portfolio which is widely used
in various fields of profession and specifically, in nursing profession. E-portfolio is basically
designed to support learning by providing a secured record of appraisals. It is aimed to foster
career building along with personal as well as professional development. It will enable
students to present evidence of the academic and professional achievements throughout the
course. At the end of the year, students put selections of their work in the e-portfolio so that
the teacher can assess their learning throughout the course. It helps in promoting student’s
reflection as well as the ownership of the learning process (Mohammed, El-sol & Mohmmed,
2017).

reflective practice of the students. Nursing education is comparatively a late adopter of such
concept. According to the literatures, portfolio never replaces the CV but it consists of heaps
of information which are not present in the CV. In a study, the researcher said that e-portfolio
is defined by as a self-selected multimedia presentation that provides a rich as well as
textured view of any student’s learning and development. E-portfolio can be helpful in
determining the competency of the nursing students which supports in the nursing career as
well. Also, mentoring is an important bilateral process of nursing and e-portfolio leads to the
promotion of the mentoring process (Green, Wyllie & Jackson, 2014). E-portfolio basically
acts as the role of evidences which reflects that the student is learning or has learned. It is
also used as a tool of summative and formative evaluation of the students which helps them
in achieving the goal while building career. In fact, nurses can develop a digital identity with
the help of an e-portfolio as mentioned by the researchers in their studies. The digital

connections also enhance the knowledge of the students in many areas such as current
healthcare trends, healthcare policies and many others that lead to professional development
(Hannans & Olivo, 2017).
Timeline for completion
It is possible to develop an e-portfolio at a certain time of a year or over a long period.
But if it is being prepared throughout the year, then students need to be careful about
organizing all the necessary information in correct order. Here, the portfolio will be
developed at the end of each academic year so that correct order of the achievements can be
maintained and it will take at least a week to complete the entire e-portfolio, gathering and
collecting all the artefacts.

An e-portfolio can represent an authentic means of assessing reflective, cognitive and
affective skills of the nursing students. With the help of e-portfolios, nurses can store
information not only for themselves but also for the employers, boards, managers and peers
in future (Tzeng, Kuo, Talley, Chen & Wang, 2015). An employer can easily access the
academic information of a student on the web if the student has developed an e-portfolio. E-
portfolio showcases the high degree of responsibility and self-organization ability of a student
which assists in developing a successful career in future (Ryan, 2018).
Conclusion
Traditional CVs are most common method of submission for job applications, but e-
portfolios may soon be required and hence, it should be developed by the nursing students.
