INTRODUCTION
Equality and diversity can be referring to as the process of promoting equality in term of
opportunity for all and with the help of diversity giving each individual a chance to show their
potentials to achieve something, by remaining free from any kind of prejudice and
discrimination. For promoting this within an organisation a number of Acts are also being
formulated by the government or corporate authorities for avoiding any kind of bias behaviour,
discrimination and exploitation of people at the workplace (Barak, 2016). The equality and
diversity plays a significant role within an organisation as by developing of a workforce belong
to different background and having several other skills or capability it become easier for a brand
to deal with the changes that are regularly getting anticipated within the marketplace. Hence to
determine further about equality and diversity this project has been conducted which is based on
TESCO a well-known retailer. This report contain aims and objectives over which the
investigation depends, secondary study in the form of literature review, methodology for
providing an idea regarding set of methods used for performing study. In addition to this it also
involves the primary data collection, its interpretation, findings and then reflection over the
methods.

Equality at workplace is defined as a culture or behaviour maintained within an
organisation where each individual working their get equal chance to perform work or show their
capabilities. They are being judged over their skills despite of background, culture, skills, gender
or age group to which they belong. On the other hand, diversity mainly refers to the
organisational setting where its workforce includes people that are from varying religion,
education, cultural background, ethnicity etc. Both terms form up an essential part within an
organisation by managing a competent workforce that help in achieving the competitive edge
(Wilson, 2014). The retail industry is considering to be one of the competitive sector among
other where changes on regular basis get anticipated to deal with a cut throat competition in
order to achieve maximum market share. So in order to remain competitive an organisation must

focuses toward managing equality and diversity at workplace so that it can develop a workforce
that are expertise in different skills and at the same time have different knowledge which
combinedly help in enhancing the level of performance that leads to maximum customer reach.
Hence to study further about the ways through which equality and diversity can be maintained
this study is conducted. This study put emphases on TESCO which is a British multination
retailer that offer groceries as well as general merchandise throughout the world and due to its
presence at global level it maintains a diversified workforce which support in getting better
information regarding this investigation.
Background of the study
The equality and diversity play a significant role within an organisation by keeping
employees motivated and delegated toward their work. Addition to this it also supports an
organisation to improve its performance at marketplace by regularly brings changes. For further
investigating about this current research is conducted over “ways of managing equality and
diversity”, by considering TESCO (Ravazzani, 2016). This company is a large British
multinational groceries and general merchandise retailer which operates its business throughout
the world. It maintains its presence world-wide where it operates approx. 3400 stores and also
maintain its online presence which make it capable of catering the customers belongs to different
geographical background. As it maintains its business in several different countries TESCO
maintains a diversified workforce that support them in understanding the consumer behaviour
and buying pattern of particular place by recruiting people from that area.

diversity as their core practices then it likely to boost up the business’s chance of getting succeed
at marketplace. This is so because hiring people from all kind of background help it in widening
the scope for range of skills or new ideas within the workplace which in turn leads to brings
improvement within current working. In relevance of selected firm, they are well aware about
their rules, regulations, policy which are being adopted by them at all aspects. Moreover, it is
also seen that they need to as they are operated globally, they have been into regulating this
policy of equality & diversity with proper considerations which assist them in hiring recruiting
candidates or applicants around the globe. In reference of chosen entity they follow inclusion &
diversity policy as they treat people accordingly in better way. Further, they are focused towards
establishing of inclusive workplace as they help in achieving of organisational goals in
appropriate way. For example- they have five colleague networks which are The Armed Forces
at Tesco, Bame Black Asian & Minority Ethnic), Disability at Tesco, LGBTQ+ & Women at
Tesco.
Selected entity follow same policy of equality & diversity at workplace and are rigid on
these policies. Furthermore, they have single standard across globe. For example- comparing it

with Morrisons they have been following equality act with strict rules. But in focus on Gender
Pay Gap company was accused in U.S for low paying low wages because of gender. Indicators
for effectiveness of implementation of equality & diversity policy are review data policies,
feedback from survey results, HR reports based on diversity, demographic make-up of
employees etc.
There are number of benefit that TESCO will get while complying with the equality and
diversity at workplace. These are mentioned below:
Better understanding of consumers: - In order to offer the product or services globally
an organisation have to generate a basic understanding regarding the consumer’s
behaviour so that product can be deliver to them as per their preferences. As TESCO
operates at global level so with the help of managing a diversified workforce belongs to
different cultural background it become easier to get a understanding regarding consumer
behaviour and things they want.
Increase employee’s satisfaction: - By providing a culture where employees get equal
chance to perform work without any kind of discrimination, then such environment
brings more satisfaction in their work. With the help of maintaining the equality and
diversity at workplace, TESCO would be able to increase the employee’s satisfaction
toward their job which in turn support them in performing well.

of employees to function appropriately for an organisation, human resources professionals of
TESCO are required to deal with the issues effectively that restrict them to manage equality and
diversity at workplace. The number of issues that TESCO may face while managing equality and
diversity are mentioned below:
Communication: - In order to get succeed within the diversity program an organisation is
required to firstly overcome with the barriers such as perpetual, cultural and language
barrier. Ineffective communication is the main cause behind increasing confusion among
employees which in turn also reduce their morale and leads to lack of team work. So, lack

of clarity in communication may become a major challenge for TESCO to integrate

Resistance to change: - There are sometimes the employees who refuses to accept the
changes that within the organisational culture or setting which restrict management to

same time the mentality of employees to not get adjust with new changes restrict the
improvement.

with these issues, the managers of TESCO must work over certain strategies that help them in
dealing with these challenges. These strategies mainly include,
Inclusion training: - It is about providing training to people belongs to different
background with an aim to make them able to work bitterly with others having different
ability, background, rational etc. By adopting this strategy, the TESCO would be able to
develop a culture of coordination among employees while avoiding the ways to combat
with the risk of harassment and discrimination.
Free flow of communication: - Another strategy that TESCO can adopt in order to deal
with the issues of managing equality and diversity is that it must focuses toward
implementing free flow of communication throughout the organisation. This will help in

P3. Conduct primary and secondary research while considering cost, assess and ethical issues
Sampling- It is all about choosing the group of people that are mainly selected in order to
gather information regarding a particular study. This selection is mainly performed either using
probabilistic or non-probabilistic method. For the current study random sampling is used to
select respondents under probabilistic methods where sample size is 40 employees. The main
reason behind selecting the probabilistic sampling is that it helps in eliminating the chances of
bias behaviour while selecting respondents by providing equal chance of being selected.
Reliability and validity of study- For maintaining the validity and reliability within an
investigation the primary information is gathered using questionnaire. This is so because it help
