TOPIC: To explore importance of promoting equality and Diversity in the Workplace
INTRODUCTION
Diversity refers differences in race, ethnicity, geographic and other backgrounds. Workplace
equality and diversity plays an important role as boosts employees’ morale and make them feel
valued. When all employees from different culture, gender, age group of people are being treated
in an equal and fair manner. Respecting all age group, cultural and ethnicity of people is known
as equality and diversity (Rojas, 2018). When employers discriminate their employees on the
basis of age group, gender and other basis then it creates several problems like increasing staff
turnover rate, conflicts and poor performance. So, it is important for all companies to promote
diversity and respecting all culture and ethnicity of employees.
Background of the study
This present study is going to discuss some challenges which companies face while managing
diversity and promoting equality at workplace like resistance of employees. It will also discuss
some benefits which companies can have by managing equality and treating employees in a fair
manner along with policies of promoting workplace diversity. Further, it will show importance
of following all steps of research methodologies and data collection in order to make study
successful and accomplishing pre determined goals (Sharma, 2016). It also helps in making data
accurate and reliable by data analysis.

To identify impacts of workplace discrimination on performance of employees.
To explore effects which gender equality can have on productivity of company.

LITERATURE REVIEW
Impacts of workplace discrimination on employees’ performance
Workplace discrimination on the basis of gender, cultural background and other basis has
negative effects on employees and company’s overall performance. Workplace discrimination or
when employers do not give equal opportunity to all people then it lowers morale of employees.
It is stated that some companies given unequal opportunities to their male and female employees
or female employees get less opportunities as compare to male which is known as gender
inequality (Stoermer, Hitotsuyanagi-Hansel and Froese, 2019). It makes employees feel lower
and de-motivated by which they leave companies. It increases employees’ turnover rate. This
increase of turnover rate affects image of the company as well as performance of company.
In addition, it is stared that when employees are not given equal opportunities and are
being discriminated on the basis of gender, ethnicity and other basis then it e-motivates them and
they find difficulties in concentrating on work. Lack of concentration on work and trust in
company leads poor quality of products and services to customers which can decrease sales of
the company. Sometimes discrimination also leads depression and anxiety in employees by
which they face problems in self control which also affect their social life (Bader, Stoermer,
Bader and Schuster, 2018). They do not spare time for their friends and families which leads
poor health quality and performance as well.

Benefits of promoting equality and diversity in workplace
Equality and diversity means respecting all age group, culture and ethnicity of employees in an
equal manner. This equality and diversity at workplace can have several positive impacts on
performance of Toyota and other companies as well. When employers give equal wage and other
promotional opportunities to employees of both genders male and female, all cultures and
ethnicity then it makes them feel valued and motivated (Alhejji, Ng, Garavan, and Carbery,
2018). Motivated and valued employees are more likely to retain with the company for the long
run and it also increase trust in employees towards company which improve image of the
company.
In addition, Ng and Sears, (2018) stated that equality and diversity is beneficial for both
employees and employers because when motivated employees know that employers are giving
importance and are concerned with their queries then they do not hesitate of working overtime
and put extra efforts in accomplishing goals of company. It satisfies customers’ needs and
satisfied customers stay with the company and also help company in promoting their products
and services by words of mouth. It promotes products of company and by doing so they can
attract customers to the great extent and can also become market leader.
Problems in promoting equality at workplace
In the context of promotion and maintaining equality and diversity in workplace it can be
said that it is not an easy task as companies have to face several problems. Toyota operates
worldwide and has around 364,445 employees at different stores and of different culture,
ethnicity and gender. Some employees work remotely and for managing them in an effective
manner and retain them with the company it is important to motivate them. But companies face
problems when they employ different culture and ethnicity of employees at their workplace.
Some employees resist to company to employ different culture of people because they face
problems in communication and interaction with each other’s due to language.
Du, (2018) Language problems create miscommunication which leads conflict in
employees. When employees do not understand languages and informations of each other’s then
it increases errors in their work. This increasing error in functions and processes affect their
performance and productivity which makes them frustrated. Due to errors and
miscommunication they do not get promotional opportunities and lack behind which decreases

their morale and self esteem. So, it can be said that resistance of employees, languages problem
are some barriers in successful promoting of diversity at workplace.
Ways to promote gender or workplace diversity
It is stated that companies face problems in promoting equality and diversity at workplace.
Employees’ resistance to employ different culture of employees, languages problems, and
communicational barriers are some problems which affect performance and productivity as well.
So, it is important for companies to promote equality at workplace by making use of effective
strategies. There are several reasons of promoting diversity and solving all issues as improving
overall performance of company, improving image, retaining employees and customers in an
organization and taking competitive advantages. There are several ways and effective policies
which can help out to Toyota in maintaining and promoting diversity and employing all age
group, gender, culture of people without getting disturbed and disturbing others.
In this context Tong, Tong and Low, (2018) stated that training is one of the best and
effective ways of promoting diversity and solving languages problems. By providing training to
employees regarding languages and all cultures, it make them employees able to interact with
each others in a particular language or solving problems of communication By using an effective
mode of communication which can solve problems of miscommunication and allow employees
to share their views and informations with each others can help company in promoting diversity.
By getting training of knowing ways of working and interacting with others in specific language,
employees can improve their performance which can increase their morale and confidence and
also improve relation with each others.
In addition, in the context of strategies of promoting diversity in an effective manner, Ziller and
Helbling, (2019) stated that team working and allocation of tasks in a group can also allow
company to improve relation of employees with each other’s and reducing problems which they
face like resistance. When employees work in a team then they interact with each others for
accomplishing common and shared goals and when they interact with each other’s then it
improves their relation. They respect values of each other’s and try to avoid little things which
eliminate conflicts among them. So, it can be said that by training, team working and
implementing policies of anti discrimination company can allow all employees to respect values
of each other’s and treating in a fair manner.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research types: Research type refers a form of collecting informations. There are mainly 2
forms in which researcher collect information either in numerical or in non numerical When all
informations are being collected in numerical form then it is known as qualitative research and
non numerical informations is known as quantitative (Flick, 2018). Selection of research mainly
depend upon the nature of the topic and for this study, researcher will gather informations in non
numerical form or focus on qualitative research.
Research approaches: It refers concept plan which consists of some steps by which researcher
can collect, analyse and interpret data. It is a detailed method of all these important steps of
collection, analysis and interpretation of data. Inductive and deductive are 2 approaches of
research which are related to generation and development of theory. Inductive research approach
is related to generation of new theory which can help scholar in collection informations related to
the topic and also increase their skills and knowledge. Whereas, in deductive research approach,
researcher develop an existing theory of hypothesis. For this study, scholar will focus on
inductive research approach.
Data collection: Data collection is the main important elements of research methodology as
without collecting data or appropriate informations, scholar cannot even complete its research
study. For accomplishing goals it is important to have accurate and relevant informations and
with the help of primary and secondary data collection, researcher can gather informations
relevant to the topic. In primary data collection, researcher gathers new data and in secondary
type they collect second hand data (Tong, Tong and Low, 2018). For this stud, researcher will
mainly focus on primary and its some sources such as questionnaire, survey.
Data analysis: Data analysis also plays an important role as it allows researcher to make all
collected data reliable and accurate by which they can make their study successful. There are 2
types of data analysis such as qualitative and quantitative and selection of data analysis depends
upon the main research type as whether it is qualitative and quantitative. For example: for
analysing non- numerical form of data or qualitative research, qualitative data analysis is being
used. Whereas, for analysing numerical data or quantitative research, scholar uses quantitative
