Introduction
Various psychologists have created a framework with the aid of which they have sought
to understand the different stages of development in the life of an individual (Dunkel & Harbke,
2017). The purpose of this paper is to examine the psychosocial stages of Erikson. In this regard,
I have examined the stage that I am in at the moment. Furthermore, three characteristics of this
stage have also been identified.
Erikson’s psychosocial stages: timeline
The psychosocial stages of Erikson have been divided in to eight categories. These stages
are based on the fact that the individuals of the society are motivated to achieve a particular
competence in their lives (Branje & Koper, 2018). Thus, each stage is characterized by a
particular problem which needs to be resolved.
The stages which have been identified by Erikson can be listed as follows –

My stage
I am currently going through the stage of intimacy and isolation. During this stage, I am
experiencing the need to explore certain relationships outside of my family environment with the
objective of seeking a long term commitment.
Three characteristics of this stage which I have experienced
In the stage of intimacy and isolation, three important factors could be noticed and they
have been listed below.
First, I have observed that there is an inherent need within me to form an intimate
relationship with someone outside of my family. My family members who have guided me and
supported me so far in my life, have now taken a relegated position as I have become more
matured.
The second characteristic which I could identify is that I am keener to explore the social
relationships in the surrounding environment. Thus, the knowledge that I have gained so far in
my life, in matters of trust and remaining true to one’s own nature, all come to play a significant
role to give a definite shape to this stage (Darling-Fisher, 2019).
A third characteristic which I observed is that whenever I am afraid of forming an
intimate relationship, I automatically get more attracted to the idea of isolation. However, this
results in bouts of depression which gets resolved once I open my feelings again. Thus, the virtue
of love is able to give me happiness in this stage of life (Jones & Waite-Stupiansky, 2017).

Conclusion
In conclusion, it can be observed that each of the psychosocial stages as advocated by
Erikson, has a particular problem that it seeks to overcome. In the ages from eighteen to forty
years, every individual is in search of intimate relationship with a member of the society who
would be able to become their guide and love them.
