Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) is basically the teaching
of the language English to people who do not have English as their first language especially
in a country where the English language is dominant. There are about 6500 languages that are
spoken in the world however English has become a dominant and is becoming a global
language in the world (Besacier et al. 2014). English language has been dominating various
fields including education, communication and international commerce (Xue and Zuo 2013).
Asia has been following this global trend and many countries in Asia have included the
English language in the curriculum of the schools thinking that this may help in contributing
to the personal, social, cultural and linguistic development of the students in the country.
However with the popularity of the language it is important to motivate the people in Asia to
learn English for the betterment of their future.
According to scholars, English has become important for communication with not
only people who speak English but also with people belonging from other foreign countries
because of the commonalty (Ahmad 2016). English in recent years has become a business
language and has become a necessity in the global workforce. Big corporate have made
English their official language which has led to people learning English. In the age of
digitalization, the internet mostly uses the English language. This has made the language
important in order to help people socialize and grow their skills of communication.
TESOL has come up with different initiatives like translanguaging, online teaching,
global Englishes, teaching through social media and advocacy in order to educate and help
people learn English worldwide (TESOL Blog 2019). Along with this, there are various
courses like the online teaching and the teaching through social media, which has gained
popularity (Jaggars 2014).

Asia is the largest continent in the world and has a vast population. It is important to
learn English in order to participate in the global world and also in developing the skills of
the people. It is important to motivate the Asian people to study and make them aware about
the importance of learning English which will benefit them in terms of attaining personal and
professional development. In order to motivate Asians into teach English various methods
should be implemented. The classroom where the students learn should be free and
approachable so that they do not feel ashamed and be more motivated to study. The teachers
should encourage the students to learn from their mistakes rather than discouraging them. In
this context, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation plays an important role. The parents intend to
lay stress on extrinsic motivation, as the results matter the most. Rewards are crucial for
luring the students to make better performance. These rewards are the source for avoiding
punishment. Satisfaction in this case is vital for averting the unpleasant instances (Alizadeh
2016). Moreover, these rewards are the source of acknowledge to the efforts exposed towards
upgrading the linguistic skills. Internal rewards, planned by the teachers, are assistance in
terms of ensuring the academic establishment of the students.
The students should be given interesting practical tasks and assignments that may
interest them which will help them to learn and grow more. The teachers should make an
initiative to make the students speak in English and communicate with their classmates in
order to motivate them. The ones availing online education should be provided with attractive
presentations, online simple exams which will motivate them in learning the language more.
TESOL with the kind of learning like online education and learning through social media has
helped in motivating students and people to learn English at their own convenience so that
they can get access to the materials at any given point.
The change and the growing importance of English has been one of the major reasons
for the motivation of ESL in Asia. Asia being the largest continent in the world needs to be a

part of the global trend in order to match up to the trends as learning and knowing English
has become an important factor which helps in building and making the person ready for the
world. Because of the rising demand of the language there have been many countries in Asia
who have already incorporated the learning of English in schools and with the help of courses
provided by TESOL people are learning the language for developing their skills and building
their career because of big companies making the English language their official business
language.
