INTRODUCTION
Academic Skills are those skills that are required for students and those in school, college
or academy and mainly for higher education. These skills enable students to learn and understand
effectively.
Skills of a Higher Education Students
There are several skills that are required for students those who are in higher education to
ensure they are able to learn and understand effectively and these skills also help students and
retention of what they learn (Cirino and Willcutt, 2017). Some of the skills that are required for
students in higher education are as follows-
Note-Taking Skill
This is one of the important academic skills that students and especially those in higher
education need to develop. This means that note-taking is an important part of academic life of
students and this is why students need to possess this skill. Note-taking refers to writing notes
when they are being taught in their class. Note-taking skills enable students to write effective
notes that can help them in learning better and that they can use for future referencing. Note-
taking helps students in preparing for the lectures before the class starts and this also enhance
their comprehension of what they are being taught and along with this retention of students also
enhance because of note taking.
Reading for critical thinking
This is another skill that students in higher education should possess. This means that
rather than only depending on the study notes and course books students should read articles and
understand those articles. These help students in widening their area of knowledge and
information. This also enhances their understanding what they are learning and what they have
learnt. For this students should read information that is related to their subject and should also
consider when the material was was written, who wrote and where it was written (Ghanizadeh,
2017). This help in understanding how the material they are reading impact and is relevant to
their topic and subject. Information and reading articles contribute in developing and improving

critical skills and this contribute in academic achievement of the students in their higher
education.
Use of Technology for research
This is another important skill that students need to have, this means that before students
enter into their higher education and start studying at university they should have knowledge of
use o f basic level technology. Technology in present time has become very part of students life
and this is why every student must have basic understanding of technology and its uses. Students
along with use of technology should also possess research skills (Rabiner, Godwin and Dodge,
2016). This is because research helps in collecting additional information regarding what they
are learning in their classes and university and these way students become able to enhance their
understanding and they also become able to learn practical application of what they are learning
in theory.
CONCLUSION
On the basis of discussion in the report it can be summarized that note-taking skills,
reading skills and use of technology are some of the important skills that students in higher
education should possess.
