Ethical Issues Presentation
Prevalent Ethical Issues in Criminal Justice and Security
Ethical issues arise in all areas of the criminal justices system. Such ethical issues might
include police brutality, corruption, unequal use of justice based on convicted respondents’ social
standing (Heffernan, 2016). Other than that, other issues that the security officers face include:
(1) determining the correct amount of force to apply during arrests, (2) safeguarding the rights of
the civilians while upholding the law, (3) acting impartially when communicating with the
public, (4) upholding an ethical way of life outside of work, and shunning profiling (Heffernan,
2016).
Addressing Ethical Issues in Criminal Justice
Some of the ways to address ethical issues in criminal justice may include serving the
community, leading by example, remaining impartial, taking responsibility, and respecting the
badge and the office. As the security or criminal justice officer my main work is to provide
protection to the people in the community and safeguarding them against oppression, violence,
and dishonesty. I also have to protect their property while ensuring the protection of their
constitutional rights. I will also try to be impartial by avoiding grudges, political beliefs, and
friendships when making decision. Additionally, I will do my best to uphold the standard of
professionalism and take reasonable action to maintain and enhance the standard of conduct.
Lastly, I will respect the badge together with the office by shunning corruption, obstruction, and
bribery.
Influence of Utilitarianism in Criminal Justice

ETHICAL ISSEUS PRESENTATION 3
Utilitarianism is an ethical system that deals mainly with the consequences of ethical
decisions. Its main idea is that whether an act is morally correct or wrong depends on the effect.
The effects of acts that are applicable are the bad and good outcomes that they provide (Nagin,
2019). Security professionals sometimes are required to make urgent decisions without time to
consult with their superiors or to follow procedures. In some situations, when challenged with
decisions, law enforcers might want to depend on utilitarianism to make an ethical decision that
is defendable when analyzed in the future (Nagin, 2019).
