1SOLUTIONS FOR ETHICAL DILEMMA
An ethical dilemma is a decision-making situation where one needs to select between two
extreme conditions that in either way affects the person morally. An ethical leader makes sure to
avoid such situations at the first place. According to Shapiro and Stefkovich (2016), it is the job
of a leader to resolve such conflicts and manage the situation in the best interest of the
organization.
In the given case study, where an organization has merged a new entity, the general
manager should himself be aware of the values and principles of the organization he is working
in. It is his responsibility to help the new managers in understanding and following the values
and ethics of the company. He should also promote open communication amongst the employees
to establish an ethical climate in the work sphere.
Secondly, when an ethical dilemma arises, the manager should figure out the benefits and
risks related to each option. He should choose the way-out that would be fair and just to the
organization or anybody related with the incident. Considering all the positive and negative
consequences the leader must take the most rational decision that thoroughly supports the values
of the organization. He must also influence his team members to act in a similar manner thus
enhancing the moral values of the organization.
After taking the decision, the last step is to carry out the actions accordingly in the most
ethical manner. The focus is to resolve the disputes without causing any loss. One should feel
good about the ultimate decision taken amongst all the alternatives. The leader should also keep
in mind that the decision taken should have a positive impact on everyone related to the case of
ethical dilemma and everyone in the group must commit to the final decision whole-heartedly
(Yukl et al. 2013). The goal of the leader must be to solve the dilemma acknowledging
everyone’s benefits.
