1ISSUES WITH SUSTAINABILITY GOALS
Sustainability is the interconnection among environmental, social and economic domain
or pillars (Mowforth & Munt, 2015). This also includes the cultural, technological and political
development that can lead to the all-inclusive growth and balance of these factors by proper
utilization of the natural and human made resources in the world. Sustainable development is
possible in any part of the world and this has become the necessity for the human beings to
change their actions especially in the cities so that sustainability can be achieved and maintained.
This particular case study is purely based in the sustainability factors that drive the decisions and
actions of the reputed resort namely Harcourt Resort.
This resort is a licensee of the reputed brand chain MyVacation for which it needs to
fulfil the sustainability criteria of the brand. This is the reason why this particular resort has
taken initiatives to have an all-inclusive growth of the society, economy and the environment of
the city where it has been working. The waste management system of the company has been
managed by WasteWorks who recycle the waste foods and other materials, the Quality Laundry
Services is responsible to supply clean linen with an environment friendly manner so that the
organization get support in achieving their sustainability goal. These are all for achieving
sustainibility goals to make the city cleaner and pollution free. The employees are given training
so that they gain competence and there is no issue with the payment of salary among the staffs.
In order to maintain economic sustainability in the city, the organization has employed local
people as the temporary staffs.
The socio-cultural sustainability has been achieved through allowing the staffs starting
from the ground level to upper in the decision-making process so that they have proper
understanding of the organizational culture and feel free to share their views in one hand and
inform any issues related with the resort. The organization has also taken initiatives to provide

safe drinking water so that the customers do not need to use plastic bottles effecting the
environment of the neighborhood. With all these measures, Harcourt resort has developed one
particular issue which is creating ethical dilemma in the mind of Wen Jie, a ground level
employee in the housekeeping department. the dilemma mainly emerges when she doubts that
the recycling process of WasteWorks has incongruity. This if revealed will affect the contract
between the resort and this company which will directly affect the employment of her partner
who works for WasteWorks. On the contrary if this remains unrevealed MyVacation will breach
contract with Harcourt Resort which will after her own job. This case, she must let the higher
authority to know about this matter so that the sustainability goals does not get affect and her
partner does not work in such unethical company.
Sustainability can be achieved in the city like the famous fast food chain McDonald’s
recycles their waste products and keep their cost low. The smart pack automatic trash compactor
saves the company to prevent waste food material from affecting the environment of the place
(Harmony Enterprises, 2018). Since 2015 it has installed recycling units in over 1,000 of its UK
restaurants which has made the city pollution free, a step towards achieving sustainability.
Harcourt can use this process to manage their waste products without involving other companies
to do for them.
