Ethical and legal values systems are necessary for becoming a professional in its true sense
Currently, I am working as a software engineer in an organization offering health care services.
While appearing in the job interview for the same job, I realized that it was not my expertise in
the field of software but “my ethical value system” and “knowledge of legal systems” pertaining
to my job helped me a lot in cracking the interview.
The knowledge of the legal periphery related to the job and presence of an ethical system can
make a lot of difference. For instance, I am aware of the constraints that government legislations
can present in the execution of my duties. This knowledge helps me a lot in the reporting and
documentation of my acts to secure my best interests if something goes wrong. My seniors also
trust me because of my accurate and judiciously justified reporting of the task.
My previous knowledge related to the typical ethical dilemmas also supports my decision-
making system a great deal. At its worst, the ethical dilemmas often disrupt the flow of the
decision making and slow down the efficiency of an employee. Sound knowledge of ethical
dilemmas allows me to analyze the situation promptly and increase my efficiency as a decision-
maker. This quick decision making along with the capacity to involve a social perspective in the
decisions will also help me in the future when my seniors will consider me for some leadership
posts.
This course also taught me that political processes and business strategies are co-related. As
businessmen, it is very important for a person to strike coherence between the two. This
coherence can support a business model for gaining some long term gains. Now when I have a
look at the policies of the organization under which I am working, I can see this coherence. The

legal perspective and ethical perspective associated with a business ensure a smooth run for the
business and work as a key component in the development of consumer perception about the
brand or the services.
Critical thinking is another area that I learned during my stint in this course. Although the course
material taught me about developing a critical perspective for legal and ethical frameworks only,
however, the mental training of thinking critically has become a habit for me and now I am
applying it in all spheres of life with great impact.
On the bottom line, I can say that this course gave me a cutting edge over the others. First, it
made me aware of the ethical and legal terminology. Secondly, it taught me about the processing
of these frameworks in day to day situations and finally it gave me an insight into the practical
world during the phase of my academics. It made me job ready and industry ready and now when
I am applying the same wisdom in the practical world, I find myself acting as a well-refined
professional and it will help me when my seniors will consider me to leadership posts.
