Responding to an Ethical scenario
As a young ICT professional, one has to adhere to the rules, regulations, and code of
ethics that have been put in place in the ICT professional. In the case scenario presented above, I
would take action to inform the manager of the situation that I have learned.
In reference to the ACS code of ethics (ACS, 2014, pg4), code one states that the
interests of the public come first before you think about yourself. In the case that I was to think
about how deserving of the scholarship I was, then it means that I will be putting personal
interests above those of the public. If for instance one was to go public with the information by
telling my schoolmates, then these will destroy the image of the school and that of the school
authority. In acting with accordance to code number three of the ACS code of ethics (ACS, 2014,
pg7), then it is prudent to come clean with the information by letting the manager be aware of the
situation. Being honest is a powerful professional trait.
There is one thing that we cannot rule out altogether, the fact that the mistake was made
unintentionally. The administration might have used the previous results unaware, and this gave
rise to the situation. There could also be a computer error during or even after entry of the
student’s marks into the system. Due to all these possibilities, it is sensible to let the manager
know as these might help the other students secure a scholarship even if it does not mean that
you are the one to get it automatically.
In this scenario, I have taken the position of informing the manager. This is further
supported by a code of ethics about professionalism. It is not professional to go public with any
information without knowing its results. Also keeping quiet is not an option as it may lead to an
undeserving student being awarded the scholarship.
