Analysis of Privacy in the Electronic Global Metropolis
Privacy in digital age has become an important aspect for people who has access to
technology and its applications. Although people of every country and every culture provides
importance to privacy, they have different approaches towards this. Even though there are
various cultural views along with cultural beliefs regarding privacy, it is important to
consider this diversity and proper effort is required for establishing a global ethics. It needs to
provide rules and strategies that are shared around the world for ensuing a global privacy
culture. It is required to identify meta-ethical positions of ethical approaches as it affects
behaviour of people towards cultural diversity which is an important aspect of global privacy
culture to ensure effective digital privacy. It will ensure that design and implementation of
privacy strategies are effective and efficient as well.
In order to analyse this thesis, the author has considered exemplification as a mode of
argument. This mode of argument provides specific examples for supporting the assertion. In
analysing how culture affects approaches of people towards privacy, it provides various
examples and these examples are analysed in details to provide a comprehensive idea
regarding effect of culture on privacy and requirement for ethical pluralism for designing an
global privacy culture as well.
IP address when obtained with other important information regarding a person provides
details which are not only sensitive but personal as well. However, in different cultures there
are different opinion regarding whether access to IP should be considered as violation of
privacy or not. Therefore, different countries and cultures treat IP address differently. The
author has provided examples of European Union and Google, an US company to justify his
argument that approaches towards privacy varies according to countries and cultures as well.
While Google has always supported access to IP address as according to them this is an

private information which requires restrictions, but according to European Union this is an
private information and therefore, proper rules are required in this context to ensure that this
information is accessed without proper authorization as it violates privacy of people.
Therefore, according to the author, not only for individuals, but concept of privacy differs
from country to country for differences in cultures as well.
The author mentions that there are differences in opinion regarding privacy in eastern and
western society. For example, in eastern society individual privacy is not that significant
compared to western concept of privacy where individual privacy is significantly important.
Therefore, the author argues that in order to create a global culture for privacy which
considers these cultural differences and its effect on approaches towards privacy, ethical
pluralism is required. This is in between ethical relativism and ethical absolutism. According
to this ethical theory, there will be some norms and values that will be considered as right and
any value different from that will be considered as wrong. But it is also important to identify
which norms and values are correct and which are wrong. However, this will lead to notion
that one culture is superior to others. Therefore, this theory provides that although different
culture has different opinion regarding privacy, this is a universal requirement for people.
Although, this ethical pluralism is not capable of resolving all of the ethical differences, it
provides context to ensure values regarding privacy are shared and therefore helps in
designing an global privacy culture while considering cultural differences regarding opinion
and approaches of people towards privacy as well. Therefore, this ethical theory is important
for ensuing that design and implementation of global privacy culture is effective and efficient
as well.

will ensure that even though there are differences in cultures and opinions, it should not affect
people privacy in digital era. This is an effective approach because today technology connects
people around the world and provided context for globalization. Therefore, privacy from
global perspective is important. However, in order to design an effective global privacy
culture, it is important to consider cultural differences and provide a global privacy standard
for people. Therefore, application of ethical pluralism is an effective as it not only consider
cultural differences regarding privacy, but also provides context for analysis of which norms
and values are correct or not. Along with that it helps in sharing ethical norms and values that
are important to consider for each and every country with different cultures and opinions for
enhancing effectiveness of strategies for ensuing privacy of people. In order to design a
privacy culture with global standard, it is essential to obtain different cultural opinions
regarding privacy and apply those opinions in designing a culture for privacy that is followed
by each country. Therefore, this is an effective approach that needs to be considered for
ensuing that this strategies for global privacy is effective and efficient as well.
