Green IT is the latest innovation that is buzzing in the market right now. The hunt for

sustainability has given rise to these technologies that considers the environment first before its

applications. In this article, the first section, debates in favour of the topic (Green IT is too

expensive) while the next section, discusses against the mentioned topic.

The Green IT is too expensive to be adopted by the common people. Initially the

implementation costs are very high. As the technology is relatively new, the research process in

this area is very limited. The technology is still nascent and difficult to develop. Conventional

processes are changed from scratch so that the green technologies can stay environmental

friendly. As the technology is new, highly specialized experts need to be deployed whose

operational costs are high. A lot of researchers and other scientific minds are needed to move

forward with this technology. Hiring such experts adds with the final cost of the product. The

initial implementation cost deters it from utilizing commercially. Lack of proper development

in this field is another aspect why this technology is expensive (Sheldon 2017). Currently, the

organizations which are pursuing the technology are far too limited and rarely faces any

competition from each other. This allow them to price their products whatever they like and

hence the burden of the cost falls down on the shoulder of the consumer who is trying to adopt

the technology. Green IT has no alternative raw material and chemical as input (Noorman and

Uiterkamp 2014). Hence, the technologies has to perform only when the source of the clean

energy is available. For example, a solar panel can work only in daylight. At night, it stores the

energy in a power saver. If the power saver is empty then the power has to be drawn from the

conventional energy source which increases the cost overally. The technologies incorporated

are still at prototype stages and the uncertainties of the performance impacts contribute to the

high costs. Also, the lack of skill and human resources contribute to the high cost of Green IT.

The argument is in favour of the high cost of Green IT.

The green IT is not that expensive though as it provides environmental benefits in the

long run. In the long run, the cost which are wasted in reducing emissions and conserving water

are all saved thanks to the benefits provided by the technology. The high cost of the IT products

are justified in the long run (Gould and Lewis 2016). It can have lifetime property value and

lifetime sustainability. Geothermal energy plants have a warranty of at least 45 years which

justifies the initial high instalments and maintenance charges. As per the requests by

Bloomington, as the green IT technologies require less money and maintenance charges, the IT

property value increases over time. Rental managers and commercial IT property owners

normally prefer Green IT technology. The lifetime savings justifies the high initial cost of the

Green IT Technology. In houses which incorporate Green IT technology, massive savings are

gained in utility bills Electricity bills are reduced by 88% due to these technologies (McKinnon

et al. 2015). Moreover, the cost of the Green IT technologies not that significant as in most

countries the people are eligible for tax credits from governments if they incorporate

environmental friendly technologies.

Thus, the technology has its own share of reason for justifying its high costs. But in the

long run, the benefits provided by the technology overrules the high initial costs and makes it

manageable due to less post installation and maintenance charges
