Introduction
Psychiatric disabilities are referred to as a mental disorder that disturbs the soundness of
the mind and affects the mood and behavior of a person. Some of the symptoms of this disability
can be regarded as confused mind, tiredness, fear, guilt and self-killing thoughts. Depressions,
Schizophrenia, eating disorders are some of the examples of psychiatric disabilities. To reduce
the impact of such mental disease among the youth and adults of Australia, the Individual
Placement Approach has been considered an important program which is recognizing the talent
and helping the individual by providing various employment opportunities (Salters-Pedneault,
2019).
In this assignment article review over the “Evidence-based Supported employment for
people with Psychiatric Disabilities in Australia: Progress in the Past 15 years has been
conducted ( Waghorn, Killackey, Dickson, Brock, & Skate, 2019).
In this article Geoffrey Wagon (2019) has indicated the power and positive influence of
Individual Placement and Support on Australia. However, with the decline in the individual
mental health industry the scope of recovery has become vast. This means such
circumstances can enhance and cure the patients. Through this article, author have discussed
and stated about the prevailing situation, upcoming challenges, and employment
opportunities for the people which are suffering from Psychiatric Disabilities It can be
observed that since 2005, evidence-based support for dynamic and challenging employment
is planned for individuals suffering from psychiatric illness. One of the popular evidence-
based approaches is Individual Placement and Support methodology which promoting and
empowering people by providing various employment opportunities (Waghorn & Hielscher,

severe and persistent mental illness., 2015). Since its development and acceptance in
Victoria in 2005 in the medical treatment of mentally ill patients, it further expanded to other
territories and states of Australia.
These IPS programs developed and showed tremendous growth from 2 specialists to
87.6 full-time employees according to the report of July 2018. Hence, the main objective of
this article is to analyze the growth and developments in the programs since its introduction
to receive insights regarding its future challenges and opportunities ( Waghorn, Dias,
Gladman, Harris, & Saha, 2014).
Mental health and Employment in Australia
Australia is considered to have a world’s best health care system. To promote and
empower the adults, this national system of Australia not only provides treatment and care to the
adults but offers disability support and employment services to them. The New Disability
Employment service was sponsored in 1986. This newly developed method proposed a new
method “train in a domicile” which generally intricate extensive hours of planning and planning
in the workshops team learning sessions and psychiatric day programs (Disability and Carers,
2019). This program was recently renamed as Disability Employment Service and currently, in
DES all are qualified Australians like individuals, job seekers can actively participate in it.
Though DES is being powerful and encouraging national service provision set-up, which has,
help the mentally upset people in the creation of successful careers, they are lagged in the
comparison of the Australian IPS system. This can be analyzed through the statics where around
31.2% of disabled people can receive opportunities to enhance their careers where through IPS

trials 42.5% of the psychiatric disable adults have received opportunities (Disabled people
Organaization Australia, 2018).
Overview of an article
The main objective of commencing this article is to evaluate the level of growth in the
developed nation that is in Australia ever since the launch of Individual Placement and Support,
so that assumptions can be made regarding future challenges as well as opportunities. To conduct
research an informal snowball sampling method has been applied to the development in these
programs since the past 5 years can be conducted. However, the research a positive outcome has
been examined. The results demonstrated that IPS programs have expanded and in the upcoming
years if the trail might emerge as more successful, the program might become an essential part if
national youth mental enterprise (Mental Health, 2019). From the study, it can be concluded that
with increment in the case of mental diseases among the youth, there is a need for better well-
being service.
Findings
Method
For the article and perceived the prevailing situation, information in the context of
employment has been gathered in the context of the past 5 years. To identify the accurate results
snowball employment method has been used so that, the information can be from multiple
locations and areas. The information which is gathered through the sources is further evaluated
through the descriptive method of quantity. To discover the employee’s specialist emails were

delivered to them. It was promised and decision regarding the maintenance of the confidentiality
of the specialist ( Westcott, Waghorn, McLean, Statham, & Mowry, 2015).
Results
From the sample-based survey, it has been evaluated that all the evidence practices have
supported the employment opportunities of the people that are suffering from psychiatric
disabilities in Australia. Despite such progress and development many states and territories in
Australia, even after having such loss IPS has approximately 31 full employment specialists and
53 employees are working in the DES program. Along with this, the evaluation of 77.7% of IPS
services has emerged in different programs (Y, K, & M, 2018).
Implementation of IPS within DES Programs
The Australian DES programs have endlessly provided ample opportunities to establish
high performance. Within the DES, in IPS no further amendments have been made, as it has
been already clear that IPS programs target are the adults who are suffering mental illness.
Whereas, DPS service providers are not required by their contacts to follow particular theory.
Despite such challenges, the majority of the areas have persisted in this approach (Mental Health,
2019).
IPS on the Sunshine Coast and in North Queensland
STEPS organization has implemented well planned and designed to expand the IPS
project on the Sunshine Coast. It can be evaluated that STEPS is a DES that works and promote
mental health in collaboration with the mental health team. The STEP IPS program has
accomplished from the period of 2010 to 2016 with more than 50% of the participation.
However, the program has started declining due to several factors including leadership

management. Several changes have been identified in the decline of the program (Ernest
Khalema & Shankar, 2014):
1. Few people were not actively participating and coordinating in the mental health
workforce. However, they were in contact with the teams and regularly updated them
about the health of the patients ( Waghorn, Killackey, Dickson, Brock, & Skate, 2019).
2. Some of the patients were not included because they did not attend the appointments.
3. Clients were no treated and handled by mental health staff from the IPS methods.
In the reaction, STEPS management has to provide the well planned and managed IPS.
With a renewed focus on IPS across the STEP sites, referrals have been increased and steering
committee meetings which have begun on the Sunshine Coast and regular management catch-
ups,
Establishing IPS within Headspace Services for young people
Headspace is an Australian main mental health facility for the youngsters aged from 12 to
25 years old which was established by the Australian authority in 2006. The Federal Department
of Health has sponsored this program, which is regulated under the Youth Mental Health
Program. It provides assistance to avoid occurrence issues like depression, anxiety stress, and
excessive consumption. Currently, this facility has been provided in through its 110 centers
which have been spread across Australia which can be availed at affordable price ( Waghorn,
Killackey, Dickson, Brock, & Skate, 2019).

Technical Support from Western Australia
WAAMH which is known as organizations of IPS workers has developed the expertise
and support system which are needed to launch new IPS sites throughout Australia. They also
support sites to develop so they can generate high performance (Disability and Carers, 2019).
