INTRODUCTION
Registered nurses provide care to patients. They apply various validated interventions.
Generally students of nursing are provided knowledge of evidence based practise. This helps in
developing core strategies which helps patients. In upcoming years, EBP has become key
component of exceptional patient care. EBP in nursing is defined as integration of research
evidence, patient's preference and clinical expertise (Adams, S., and Cullen, L. (2011). Nurses
are motivated by encouraging problem solving approaches to provide individualised patient care.
The following report is based upon praxis. This is defined as analysis of skills of a professional.
In this report, there is discussion about praxis of healthcare nurse.
Definition of Praxis
Praxis is defined as process by which a lesson, skill or theory is enacted, realised or
embodied. Praxis can also be defined as act of applying, engaging, practising, realising and
exercising ideas . This is a trendy topic in philosophy and it is used by many philosophers in
their writing such as Plato, Francis Bacon, Hannah Arendt, etc. There is meaning of educational,
medical, political and spiritual realms.
ASK Identification of any situation in healthcare in which you identified a gap in your
knowledge or an opportunity for learning
The first step is to identify what exactly the problem is with patient. When the nurse
meets patient, the first and foremost thing to do is to formulate clinical question (Berger,
(2010)). As a nurse, the question asked to the patient was how are you feeling and what problems
are you having.
ACCESS Identification of one source of peer reviewed evidence and discussion of how you
applied the evidence to this situation
This is step 2 of EBP, there is need for answering questions. In this case, individual is
seeking evidence for determining which therapy is best for this patient. In this step, nurse decides
which is the best method to treat this patient.

APPRAISE
For appraising the evidence, the first thing required is need for critically reviewing
journals and articles that found for applicability and validity (Keister, D., & Tilson, J. (2008).).
For instance, in the given case as patient is in category of older adults and not adolescents. This
source is appraised and thinking is done back to the nursing research. The article used by nurse
in evaluating this patient is given below -

APPLY
In this step, the source of evidence is appraised. This helps in guiding nurses for
completing the appraisal for assuring that article which is taken is relevant or not (Melnyk, B.
M., and Et. AL (2010)). When the applicable evidence is applicable, there is need to apply it.
This is in the form of implementation of findings with patient.
What you learnt from using praxis
AUDIT
This is known as the final step in process that is there to assess whether or not the chosen
intervention is correct or not. In the given case, it is analysed that whether patient is in pain and
if that broken leg hurts (Ogiehor-Enoma, Taqueban, & Anosike, (2010)). After evaluating the
treatment given to the patient obtained from above is effective or not.
Ask The patient had accident and broke his left leg.
He was on wheelchair.
Access What to use for treating this patient – what will
be more effective physiotherapy or incidental
therapy.
Appraise This patient is given physiotherapy
Apply The patient is given this therapy for around a
month. His progress revealed that there is not

much difference in his leg.
Audit This patient is thus given another therapy for
treating his leg.
