WEEK 2 your draft mind map and how it relates to your industry topic/issue;
Expatriation, as a business term this word often invites conspiracy. One can always find a
contradictory set of reporting connected to Expatriation. However, stakes are always high and
a company is duty bound to figure out the right reasons for a failure. The complexity of the
problem and the ambiguity associated with it enticed me to pick it as the topic of my
endeavor.
A variation in the findings of a PEST analysis can be a big reason behind the expatriate
failure. Most of the companies understand their native markets well. During the phase of an
expansion, they try to replicate similar success models in other countries as well. Primary
study of the management and consumer behavior says that every market in a different country
is an outcome of the social culture and the traditions. The culture in Europe may have some
similarities in the term of consumer behavior; however when we compare the same with the
USA or South Asian countries then the things change drastically. Apart from the countries
and regions, this segmentation is also applicable to the topography and demography of
different places. In order to mitigate the risk factors a proper pest Analysis and an in-depth
research into the demographic and topographic details of the area is very necessary.
The impacts of the expatriation end up in a complete loss for any endeavor. It kills the
business cycle. In normal cases, a business can boom after a bust, however, in the case of an
expatriation, the business comes to a standstill and sometimes they need to fold it in between.
On the scale of an empathy canvas, we can take the resort in the case of an employee that
became a victim of one such exercise. They end up losing their gains because of an
expatriation failure. They end in painful condition because he lost the quality of life that he
earned during the first few years of their career. Another factor is connected with the
appraisal. Suppose any such employee goes to search for a new job, now once again they will
treat him as a teammate of a team that was a loser.
Nothing fails like a failure; the same thing is applicable to the exercise of finding the reasons
behind an expatriate failure. Over-ambitiousness of certain companies can be considered as a
major reason behind it. Japanese auto giant Toyota has a remarkable record of working as per
the demand and supply cycles of the market. It happens because they follow a Just In Time
manufacturing model. They can adjust their resources and inventory in accordance with the

demands. Even in the case of a failure of the rate of difference between the expected values
and the expatriated values may remain on the lower side. Many companies may deny this
initial caution during the launch of a product or while setting the targets. It is true that
Product life cycles of various products are shrinking, however, a concept like beta testing of
the products are giving them a desired lease of time to experiment and revise their
projections.
An expatriation is a number of big companies; no big companies accept that they failed in the
planning. The burden of the failure often transmits on the bottom layer. We can understand it
with a positive example. Tata India Limited is a reputable company in the field of the
automobile; they launched an economic car of the world under the brand name Tata Nano.
This car failed because of wrong brand perception. Chairman of the Tata India Limited
gracefully accepted the Expatriation of their think tank. How many times we hear such
confessions coming from the side of the head and honchos of a multinational giant. This is
why we can say that on the scale of empathy canvas the presence of expatriation is a pain for
most of the stakeholders.

While dealing with a complex subject like Expatriate failure one has two think on a
multidimensional level. In the current diagram, we can establish the probable reasons from
above the line activities like PEST results and planning. After the identification of the
problem, we can always keep a check on the operational planning and mitigate the processes
that can cause the problem. On the bottom line of the mind map, I am expressing my concern
related to the impact of the Expatriate failure on the bottom line of the operations. It is very
important to conceive every problem as a model. A mind map where we draw a model has
the potential to ease out the process of the problem identification. After this identification
process, we can move up to the next level where we identify the key result areas of the
problem-solving.

With the help of this research, we wish to examine the impacts on various layers of
stakeholders that become a victim of Expatriation. In order to find out the impact, I will take
the support of both qualitative and quantitative method. Since I am planning an action
research, I need to take care of all the loops that will form during the course of this research.
In a loop base research, we can reexamine the worth of the question that we are raising. Since
it is an inductive research where we are trying to find out certain causes this type of a
structure is important for us. Sometimes research programs based on the deductive formulas
end up moving in a circle.
In order to collect data, we will take a resort in the secondary literature. We will collect
important data on a board and in the first step of the calculations figure out certain issues and
key recommendations based on the merit of maxima and minima. After jotting down the key
result indicators we will launch another research where we will verify certain facts that can
lead us to a conclusion. In order to ensure the maximum participation, we will give equal
space to the issues of all the three stakeholders that we mentioned in the mind map. These
three stakeholders are
1. The team doing the task of incremental planning after receiving the feedback.
2. Employees that will get affected due to the presence of Expatriation
3. Operational teams trying to mitigate the impacts of the Expatriation
With an intention to consolidate the findings we will also make sure that certain regions of
the world like USA, EU, South East Asian Countries are getting due representation during the
course of secondary data collection. In order to check the variables in our research plan, we
will try to accommodate as many industry fractions as we can.

Author Douglas Tay came up with an interesting observation connected to a new stream, in
his article he wrote about the emergence of Expat entrepreneurs. It is a new stream of all the
possible standards. Here he mentioned the principle of converting a problem into an
opportunity. The population that got expatriated often finds themselves at crossroads because

of the label of unsuccessful stamped on their foreheads. In order to make the best out of this
"nothing to lose" scenario, they can take bigger risks and come up with some new ideas.
During the course of the study of the human case, I mentioned the case of a person who is
stuck in Singapore and has no resort to him. The outlines of this article check the problems
that people like him facing. He can connect with it and find some motivation and direction to
move forward in life. The problem of Expatriation leaves a painful aftermath on the scale of
empathy. These inspiring words, reliable facts, and success stories can help me in churning
out some definitions and keywords that can set an example for expats and support our
research to find a few solutions in the terms of negative impact mitigation.
Branine, M. 2011. Managing Across Cultures: Concepts, Policies, and Practices. Sage
Publications. Thousand Oaks:
Author Mohammad Branine presented an overview of the process of Expatriation in his book
where he put his emphasis on the cross-cultural misunderstandings and miscalculations. He
presented some poignant examples of McDonald in China and others. Most of the case
studies presented in this book also carry the tones of the reforms. However, we can always
chalk out the period of the expatriation and learn our lessons. This book defines the
importance of the PEST exercise. PEST exercise can act as a big tool. He also talked in detail
about the cultural variables that can play havoc during the initial run of the business.
This book is very essential for our research because it deals with one of the key aspects which
are planning. Since it deals with the cross-cultural impacts of the phenomenon it supports us
in finding out a few important concepts connected to the planning at both the stages. For
instance, during an initial plan, we can keep an account of all the precautions, SWOT related
recommendations. However, once we are functional we should focus more on the local
elements and try to come up with plan B and Plan C and so on. This book also tells us about
the evaluation of the brand values in different countries. Sometimes most of the expatriation
blunders take place because of the over ratings of the brand. In the final chapters, this book
also tells us about the technology dumps that are doomed to fail after a point of time.
The exercise of literature review connected us to the identification of the problem on three
dimensions. The first dimension is connected to the rehabilitation of the employees. How
they can convert a problem into an opportunity, then we have this book talking about the

cross-cultural conflicts associated with the brands. During the course of week one, we started
our research on a note where we were worried about the shrinking brand life cycles and an
increase in the number of expatriation. The second source of our literature review not only
confirmed the line of thought that we were thinking but also gave us some meaningful
insights in the direction of a probable solution. It came out to be a fruitful session where we
answered a few questions connected to three stakeholders that are a part of this exercise.
